640d....adaptive LED headlight issue....
Discussion
Hi all,
Well.... I too have the same issue with my 61 plate 640d, with adaptive LED headlamps.
Started about 3 weeks ago.
Dipped headlamp left failure.
Vines Guildford said there is nothing wrong. Strangely, the light was working the day they looked at it. Also the fault code is not stored apparently.
It's going back in asap. I have an aftermarket warranty so, let's hope it's covered, or BMW make a contribution (full BMWSH), or the dealer I bought if from in July (a Merc main dealer) cover it under Sale of Goods act or whatever.
If anyone has an update, I'd be really grateful and I'll post up anything I learn.
Cheers
Flinty

Good luck with the warranty claim. Its clearly a manufacturing fault considering the numerous reports and always being the N/S dipped beam from 2011 ish cars. Both the original headlight and my second hand replacement appear to have the same LED section going.
I attempted to dismantle the old headlight unit to see if anything was salvageable / repairable. Undone a few nuts and most of the internal headlight has fallen to bits. Need to heat up and remove the front lense now to get to all the bits!
Does anyone know any specialist electronic companies that can replace the LEDs?

If they`re saying that there is nothing wrong, maybe take out the BMW insured warranty. Well.... I too have the same issue with my 61 plate 640d, with adaptive LED headlamps.

My aftermarket Warranty says No. It excludes bulbs and 'headlamp units'.
I tried to argue that the whole intention of a Warranty is to cover elec/mechanical breakdown of parts that should not wear out so quickly... No chance...
The supplying dealer said they may consider a contribution, but small. The supplying dealer also suggested I buy the BMW extended warranty and put in a claim after a few weeks.... Technically probably fraud, but I'm sure he's done worse!!!
It's booked into Grosvenor in Reading soon. They will hopefully diagnose and I'll report back.
There definitely seems to be a problem with the early 61 plate cars and these Left Hand lamps. I wonder if BMW know? The franchised dealers aren't letting on.

Still the same ongoing issue for me. It is currently an intermittent fault, however it seems to be worse when left in auto lights rather than switched on.
Wondering whether to re-instate the BMW warranty, as its only the warranty fee plus a 'diagnostic' fee check. Which would be less than a new headlight. Does anyone know if headlights like this would still be covered under the extended warranty though?

My apologies for rebumping this old thread.
I too have the same left dipped beam issue (with adaptive led headlights)
and dealer could not find anything (despite paying diagnostic fee).
Anyone figured what the issue ended up to coming from?
Perhaps that will work in your favour with regards to the warranty if you were to take it out.I too have the same left dipped beam issue (with adaptive led headlights)

As it wasn`t an existing fault - they couldn`t find a fault

I was looking through the Mondial & BMW warranty. It appears that both list 'bulbs' as exclusions from the list. (I know it's intended to stop claims for brake light bulb etc)
I wonder what the chances are of arguing that it is the headlight 'unit' that is faulty and not the 'bulb' that has failed?

I would be utterly gob smacked if they didnt cover the headlight unit.I wonder what the chances are of arguing that it is the headlight 'unit' that is faulty and not the 'bulb' that has failed?
Its a sealed unit, if it stops working its a whole unit to replace, we are not talking about just replacing bulbs.
Its for reasons like this I keep warranties linked to the manufacturer, aka mondal. I have an audi extended warranty for my A7 purely for the reason that "simple" things like the headlight no working can cost 2k upwards! The A7 Also has LED adaptive headlights.
Either try and get it fixed with a contribution or keep and eye out on ebay for a unit and get an indy to fix - that will also come with a risk of course!
You need to video the fault happening and show them the video or take it to them and show them the fault. As others have said if they dont see it on first attempt they wont bother
Sorry for reviving old thread.
Went to dealer today, they diagnosed "possibly" the left LED module as the culprit.
I checked realOEM and there is only one module that isn't shared by left side and right side, perhaps it's that one.
They asked me to bring the car in again for another check, where they take out the headlight and measure the module and the cables to it as a further step.
Not sure..
