Is the consensus to go only for an M-Sport variant?

I’m not doing huge miles, love the F-12 but there is a serious lack of 640i around at all that aren’t SE spec.

What are the thoughts on what to do?

It's down to personal preference. M Sports are more desirable hence generally more being produced (maybe not for petrol F12s though!) and a higher residual value. They are around but as you have found, are pretty rare. Depending upon your budget it may also be that more SEs drop into this search criteria. You see SEs starting for c£16k whereas M Sports tend to be c£20k +.

I would hold out for the car I wanted, which would be an M Sport.

I'll go against the grain on what model to get as I have a 2017 640d GC SE.

M Sport adds the body kit and bigger wheels.

I do 20-25k miles a year and for me comfort plays a big part. They ride a lot smoother on the 18" SE wheels and I am more than happy with runflats as I was on my 330d.

How many people that moan about runflats actually drive regularly over long distances. I think it is only a few. I've had a blow out on the motorway and several other punctures and with all of them I have been able to continue my journey and/or get home.

Going back to the cars mine had 24k miles on when I got it just over 2 years ago and now has 70k miles. In that time I have replaced a leaking damper.

Spec wise, 2015 onwards I think they all get the leather dash, digital dash, bigger exhaust tips and wireless phone charging.

My own car has HUD, Adaptive LED'S, Comfort Seats in 2 tone Nappa, Soft Close Doors, Heated Steering Wheel and probably some more.

The only thing I might swap it in for is a 3.0 X3 for my wife to use and I will then get a Golf or similar as I also have a Z4 Coupe.

Plus the sports seats, M steering wheel, different dash trim, shadowline exterior, anthracite headlining and the leather dashboard. Not sure if the leather dash was added to facelift SEs but it does make the interior feel more special.

Leather dash was standard on all models after the facelift as were the sports seats as far as I am aware.

What I should have said is that you need to look at what options you need/want and then search from there
