Hi,

Quick question, a higher than normal vibration has developed over the last 2 weeks at idle and low gears, taken to a garage and they have identified a faulty injector, although they suggest they think it is also a knackered Dual Mass Flywheel, getting the injector replaced to begin to see if it fixes the vibration problem, however, if it doesn't I have been quoted £1000 for DMF replacement with non-oem part.

Is it essential to get the DMF changed immediately or will it continue to run "okay" (based on current vibration levels being pretty low) for 1,2, 3 months with progressive vibration increase before needing changing? Conscious I use the car for work and don't want it to fail suddenly whilst out and about.

Also, are the two issues totally unrelated, or could there be a connection between the injector failing due to the DMF being on its way out or is it completely coincidental that I have both issues which are often diagnosed by increases in vibration.

Any experience or nuggets of information would be gratefully received as they are doing phase 1 (injector change) .

Thanks

latest update is that the injector has now been changed but the vibration remains so looks like the DMF will need to be changed, anyone have an opinion on whether I can run the car as is for any meaningful length of time before the expense of the DMF change?

Mine vibrates at 80-90mph (autobahn) (wheels are balanced)also a rattle noise when depression the clutch, release bearing. I was going to get the whole lot changed. I found a dmf kit for around £600 (luk)

We're doing 3000miles around Europe this summer so want to sort. However there is no trace of it at the speeds you state. Was it previously at a higher speed?

Prop shaft gasket thing?

Sometimes you will hear a chattering noise when you depress the clutch halfway down with the engine at idle. I'd be inclined to get it changed sooner rather than later.

Yep, that's what I'm planning. It's rattled for 15,000miles!

It may be worth checking to see if any of your alloys are hot after a drive. I had a vibration, 70-80 mph on my old 335i which I was sure was engine related but it turned out to be a corroded ( & binding rear brake calliper ). Might be worth a google, you'll several threads online about the binding brake issue. Hope it is a sticking brake 'cos the cost to fix will be much less than injectors or DMF.

Hi chaps, thanks for the replies, apologies for slow response, been away with work for several days, on my BMW is really quite a slight vibration, there is absolutely no rattle, the increased vibration is at idle and up through gears 1-3, above that you cant tell any difference in the vibration, there is no vibration at high speed whatsoever and it runs as smooth as it did before.
I am picking the car back up from the garage today so will see whether I think there is any difference in the vibration levels now the injector has been changed, as I said in the previous post the garage said there is no change in the vibration, which is a kicker since I have now spend nearly £600 to get it diagnosed and injector changed.

Will revert back once I have driven it post injector change

Thanks

If it breaks it could damage the bellhousing = new gearbox.......

Update,

Unfortunately no change in engine vibration, therefore = dual mass flywheel replacement. Let's hope that is the final instalment

I've had mine confirmed as Dmf.
I've managed to source luk parts fairly cheaply, my garage will charge 4 hours to do the lot. Clutch, dmf.

Hi,

Have you got yours changed yet? So finally got mine done, all in cost £1000 for a non oem dmf.
Drives Nicely now it's been changed, disappointed with Bmw quality but let's hope I get a decent run now it's fixed.

Cheers

Not yet, sounds like it should make a difference.
Found a luk kit £379
Labour will be £376.

I'll get it done in the next couple of weeks.

New dmf and clutch etc.
Dmf was failing clutch had lots of life left.
All noises gone.
Clutch a bit lighter too.
Yet to do motorway speeds yet but feeling promising.
