There is plenty of noise from the 340/440 petrol.

The pops and crackles on overrun in sports mode even without the MPPSK are enough for me and the cold start on my F31 340i sounds lovely.

I have only had one diesel car , a Merc CLS a few years ago, never again.

Catch diesels whilst you can, dealers are already seeing a turn around in order behaviour.

just to add my 2p - we have a 435d xdrive cab. It's my missus car and hit all her objectives apart from sounding like a F type! Fortunately, it was £400+ pm cheaper so we forget about that point.... and you cant argue with £325pm + £3k over 24 months for a £50k car. A 440i was over £500+ pm plus bigger deposit. She was looking for a S3/golf/1 series/lower spec 4 series but the deal was that good.

You get piped exhaust so it does sound a little fruity. The spec is great, the ride is firm, the ZF is also great (though worries me as i have a 140 on order... will it suit the petrol M?) and the engine is a low down rocket but is dead above 5k so will uninspire esp if coming from a M5. Handling, I had a play with a clio RS last week and it flew round a roundabout on rails compared to the weight of the 435. But i did have the roof down and nailed him on a DC! The boot is ok when up and we got 4x people ski kit to go to the airport in it.

Overall, the missus loves it and dreads the day she has to give it back. Id test drive though its prob not right for you but if good value, fast 4wd gt/cab, is your aim, it should be on the short list

Thanks, it's really helpful to get other people's perspectives - especially when they've had to make a similar decision.

It looks like I really need to try and spend a day in a 440 and 435D to see which one is right for me - I'm just so reluctant to let my M5 go!

Cheers Guys

How about you keep the M5 as a plaything, and get an M240i Convertible as a daily car? Or a used M235i Convertible, if the finance equation doesn't stretch to a new M240i?

Yes, I know it sounds odd, but I moved from a 330d xDrive Touring to an M235i Convertible and I don't miss the xDrive at all. ANd i've even driven the 2 Series in Alpine snow.

One advantage of the 2 Series convertible is that it;s a fabric top - it uses a fraction of the boot space of the hard top and we've happily carried everything for a 2-week European road tour in the boot, even allowing for the roof to be folded. And still fitted our 22 bottles of wine and 36 bottles of beer plus a ton of cheese in the back.

And I think that the M240i power/weight ratio and handling will be closer to the M5, although obviously not in the same league in terms of power and handling (well, except that it's a lot lighter ....)

I can't imagine anything worse (motoring wise) than a diesel convertible that horrible partial throttle clatter? No thanks, couldn't stand it in my old F31 335d touring (probably the worlds most overrated car) in a convertible it would be intolerable.

Guys, thanks for the advice.

I hadn't really looked at the 240i convertible as I'm really trying to stick with folding metal roofs. Having never owned a convertible I want to ease myself in just in case - I'm assuming/hoping that with the roof up in the 4-series it feels the same as a coupe?

I know they take a lot more boot space and add a lot of weight, but I never really need the boot for anything other than some footballs for the kids and a gym bag. I would love to keep my M5 if I could (my reluctance to get rid of it is why I haven't really progressed yet), but my Wife has drawn a line in the sand on this issue so I'm "saving my battles" on this issue.

I did hear a 435D xDrive go by the other day and TBH, I couldn't really hear any engine clatter. I guess I need to hear one on cold start to really see if I can live with it.

Have to admit I've (almost) made my mind up to go for the 440i. I've specced one up on Drive the Deal and at the moment it looks like I save at least 20% off the list - which means getting one with all the options ticked for the same price as a 1-year old used car. I know it won't be as fast, or handle as well as, my M5 but because of where I live I never really get the chance to drive it like it was made to be driven anyway.

Soon as I can find a 435D and 440i local enough so I can sneak off for a test drive I will get the ball rolling!

Cheers!
