Hi,

Looking at purchasing a 2011 BMW X5 40d M Sport. Are there any owners who can tell me what the real world average mpg is?

Thanks in advance.

I've got a newer F15 40d, and average 29-30mpg (living in outer West London) so I'd expect an older gen E70 to be a little bit less than that....??

Thanks, that's what I thought. I was hoping for 30+ mpg but guess I'm kidding myself if I expect anything like that.

Honest John's website is generally a go-to resource for real world MPG.

I had a 2012 E70 40d and averaged 27.7mpg over 25000 miles, mainly on Lincolnshire's A and B roads (and VERY little in built up areas) - and found no difference in consumption however it was driven, due to the impressive torque and power for the weight and size of the car.

Ditto above really - never 30mpg, usually more than 25mpg showing on the OBD as an average...

Well, that's crap. I get 23mpg on my 4.8i on the motorway.

Is the mpg from 40d the best in the X5 range?
Looking at 2011 - 2013 vehicles.
I thought I'd read it was more fuel efficient than the 30/35d.

If it helps, I have a 2011 30d and average 32.8mpg on the computer. My commute is an 8 mile A class road. I have seen 36/37 on longer journeys, but on the motorway, above 70mph the mpg really starts to drop off to around 31/32mpg at 75mph. Yet my old E53 would see 36mpg on the motorway, but worse on short trips.

got a 40d X6 and my mileage is consistent with those posted. Can get 35-37 on a 40 mile motorway run but driving at 50-60 mph, but usual mix of town / mway gets me around 27- 28 mpg which, for the engine and experience, I'm ok with.

It is not official figures that is for sure. On a motorway run though I would probably get 32mpg. My driving is mixed hence the OBD invariably showing between 25 and 30mpg.

I would suggest everyday driving you'll get mid-twenties, on a run over 30mpg.

My 50D X5 is probably on a par with the 40D and I'm right in those figures.

I've just done a long weekend trip down to near Tenby in West Wales from London, and averaged 36mpg in my F15 40d for the just short of 500 miles roundtrip. Traffic on M4 was heavy stop start crawl from just east of Bristol area all the way through to Swansea on Friday afternoon/eve, but had a traffic free cruise at 70mph all the way back late last night.
