E91 is a bit more electronic than I would like - I know that as well as the water pump they have electric PAS, no dip-stick, no temperature gauge on E90 or E91 (but E92 and E93 do for some reason) and maybe other electrickery!
Our 2005 E91 has a traditional PAS setup, and a conventional (i.e. not AGM) battery - just to confuse things smile Did these things perhaps change in conjunction with the arrival of Efficient Dynamics?
LCI cars have the ePAS, pre-LCI are hydraulic. These are the ones to go for imo, as well as having the N52 rather than N53 engine.

Had my '06 now for 4.5yrs, and gone from 57k to 103k in htat time. It's barely needed anything more than service parts, and has been one of the cheapest cars to own I've had. Not had the water pump done yet, but can't argue with what that costs given I've had nigh on 5yrs of trouble free motoring.

I actually went from a 330i LCI (which was a whole pile of trouble) to a pre-LCI 325i. My experience of it (and the guy I know well who I bought it off) has been exactly the same. It's the most reliable car I've ever owned. It's even still on it's original battery after 10 years.

I am just selling my 130i, it is now on 120k miles and is sweet as a nut, doesn't really drink much oil, sounds lovely and pulls like a train. These are bullet proof.

Considering I only got £4k for it makes me think I might be making a serious mistake.

We have an E91 325i manual and an e46 Alpina 3.3 coupe.

The E91 has been brilliant over the 7 years we've had it and has only needed servicing and a water pump in that time. Honestly, if the cost of a water pump change on a £40k car (new obviously!) puts you off, well you'll find a similarly priced weakness with any car.

It's a fantastic family wagon and the engine is great. Ours is a member of the family now. Can't imagine not having it.

Unfortunately, we feel similarly about the old Alp, which has a write up in reader's cars, so that's had fortunes spent on it and continues to require more. E46s are not exactly maintenance free!

Buy an E91 with the N52 and enjoy it. If it hasn't had a water pump and is over 60k miles (all of them) change it and enjoy motoring!

Thanks for putting me right about the steering - every day is a school day!

I would only contemplate a pre-LCI as I really don't like what I've read about the N53!eek

Oh wow, an E91 335i manual is exceptionally rare! Especially in M Sport trim, can we have readers ride thread? Or at least some pictures?

Sorry to hijack, but I'm looking to replace my E46 330i with an E91 or E61, could I have some more details please?
