Always a little galling when a new car has to go in for unexpected work so soon.

On the plus side, should be good until 244k now. The waterpump is a smart one too. Small price to pay when it's the good lady's car. An easy life is more valuable than money. smile

Yep, that's my thinking. At the end of the day, it's a 13 year old car with >100k miles. You have to make such purchases with your eyes open.

When it comes to the waterpump, seemingly it's a case of 'when' rather than 'if' so better to do it now rather than post failure (with the risk of overheating and cooking the head).

Since it's going to be in there for a bit, I've requested them to change the (annoyingly expensive electric) waterpump (car on original pump and 122k miles). Better to do it now than it failing when driving up to Scotland.
Good decision, at 122k miles it must be on borrowed time - and if you leave it till it breaks, it will always happen at the most inconvenient time possible (don't ask me how I know smile )

I'd also get your engine mounts done whilst the subframe is dropped (as it;s the only way to get at them).

A grand to do that lot sounds pretty good value tbh, I've done oil filter housing, and the water pump on mine and have a set of engine mounts, sump gasket and sump bolts ready and waiting for when I get a chance. Having paid for just the parts you're quite far towards a grand and that's probably a days worth of labour whilst that's up in the air.

It's these things that make the difference though.

OK, so the dealer I bought the car from has been less than helpful; "we don't have a garage to diagnose the proble, you need to talk to the AA...."

After much toing and froing I decided bu99er this, I'll get me local indie (who I know and trust) to change the oil filter housing gasket and the oil cooler gasket - about £100 of work inc parts - and see how we get on. TBH, given the car a) only has a tiny amount of goo in the coolant header tank, b) no goo at all in the oil filler cap, c) is starting/running beautifully d) the car runs at between 95 and 104 degrees so isn't overheating, I think this is the most likely culprit.

Whilst at the garage they'll give the car a full going over.

I really hope this fixes the problem as it's such a great car (particularly the stereo!) and given I only paid £4995, spending a few hundred £ still makes it a bargain if I get it sorted.

Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Further testing now done it’s almost certainly not the cylinder head gasket woohoo

The oil filter housing & oil cooler gaskets will be changed Monday and that will hopefully be the end of the problem. The dealer has said they’ll reimburse me also. Hoping this will mean a happy ending and I can look forward to enjoying some trouble free miles!

I may add the car to the Readers pages once I’m sure the problem is solved and I’m keeping the car.

A small milestone reached on the way home from the beach tonight smile

For a 14 year old car, I guess 100,000 miles is actually on the low side. Roughly 70,000 of those 100,000 miles have been covered during our ownership.

I spent 8 hrs yesterday, 12 hrs today and probably another 4 hrs tomorrow working on the wife's 330i.

Rebushed the rear subframe, new arms, new bushes, new ARBs, new drop links, new brake pipes. New front arms, track rods, track rod ends, ARB drop links and Bilsteins and EIbach springs all round.

Flushed the brake fluid, replaced the diff and gearbox oil.

Tomorrow, I'll flush the PAS fluid and fit an new reservoir. Then I'll drop it in it's wheels and using a couple of bits of string, a spirit level and a laser measure, get the wheels pointing in broadly the same direction.

My hands are sore and I have a scab on my head from banging it on the underside of the car.

Not really, this is my 335i at 6 yrs old, just about to crack the 200k miles point, and was still on original turbos clutch and shocks.

I often wish that I'd been more brave and gone for a 335i instead of the 330i. The extra performance and torque has always really appealed to me. Fuel economy is very similar too and it seems like a no brainer(to me) to go for the 335i(more performance/more torque/same fuel economy). cool

Picked up the wife's 330i today from the garage.

Sump pan gasket replaced
Oil filter housing replaced
Water pump and thermostat replaced
Oil and oil filter change
Aircon lovely and cold

That should do her for 100k/10 years. biggrin

Hi all, I’ve put a deposit on an F31, if all goes to plan I will be advertising my 05/55 E91 330i SE (manual) in the next couple of weeks. It’s been very well maintained by myself and the previous owners.

I don’t want to break any posting rules, but I’ll give the thread the heads up when the advert goes live. It’s a really sorted car with sports seats, Birds B3 suspension kit, CIC Nav upgrade & Alpine running Style 193’s.

Still not sure I’m doing the right thing, as I’ve become rather attached to it over the past 4 years!

Cheers.
Shame, I compromised and bought an E90 330iSE a couple of months ago! I convinced myself the split/fold rear seats would work, but a Touring would work better!

I'll be looking out for your advert.
Ah what a shame, it won’t be going live for a couple of weeks, I want to get the car cleaned and properly prepared for sale. I also want to ensure I’m happy with the incoming F31...

Cheers.
What news in this?

Depends whats actually wrong with it I guess. Poverty Spec with scuffed paintwork everywhere but yet calls it Spare or repair.

Edit- Just read the advert again. Water pump failed. Cant imagine the water pump on its own would be enough of a reason to get rid of the car! Whats else has it done when it failed? HG maybe?

Sorry, I bought it. Now a member of the club!

Seller was excellent, car was exactly as described. The CIC nav and Alpine audio is excellent, as is my nirvana for BMW seats. Cloth sport seats with Lumbar support. It drives excellently and wouldn’t think it has anywhere near the 138k it has. The folder of receipts is massive. I need to find tune my driving position it in, but after 100,000 miles in its predecessor that’s a given.

My only ‘plans’ for it are to update the nav controller to a CIC one, fit a set of MY07 climate controls, and drive it. No pictures yet, as I only collected yesterday evening. It is trial by fire for it though, as on Friday we’re off around France in it!

Thanks to all those who expressed an interest in my E91 and thank you to Jake for a very a straightforward sale! I’m really glad it has gone to a good home.

I’m enjoying the new F31, but still missing the manual box a bit....

A couple of F31 dealer pics below and one of the departed E91. I should really start a readers ride thread and perhaps an F31 bearding thread....?

Cheers!
