Got my car back after nearly 4 weeks at the garage. Wanted them to look into an intermittent EML light but they found a big oil leak and things escalated. Given that the car is 11 years old with 142k I wasn’t expecting too much from the warranty but it was amazing! All this for £100!

Nice! Assume 335i?

Good result. “Lubricated rear wheel bearings” is nonsense though. They are sealed.

They really went to town on that. What warranty is it?

I should get that recall done too. How long did it take?
I dropped the car in at 10:45, waited on it and was gone by 12:30. That included the video of the health check too.

It's recommended to, as there is a risk of fire if it isn't done. Usually affects cars in warmer climates, so winter will be no issue, but better safe than crispy.

BMW (not the dealer, but presumably BMW UK) phoned me last week to ask why I hadn't had ours done yet. Surprised they're bothered enough to chase up recall work on a 15 year old car.

Main reason for not having it done yet, is that nearest main dealer is 8 miles away - and we only have one car at the moment (if we have to take the car over there and leave it with them, its a pain to get back again). I should sort it out soon - has anyone had any luck with asking the dealer to collect and return their car for recall work?

Best piece of preventative maintenance ever! Takes all of not many minutes to fit, and saves potential £50 new breather pipe and probably a day of faffing dropping the tank etc.

If need be, you can get it done on a waiting appointment. I had mine done on a Saturday morning as it's 12 miles each way to the dealer. Otherwise ring your local dealer. Easiest thing to do is give them the last 7 of the VIN, and then see if they can do a courtesy car or drop off and collect.

This weekend i flashed XHP onto the 335i. Had forgotten what a difference it makes to the gearbox!!! cloud9

@royobannan thats a nice amount of work that they've done!!

Assume the EML was boost pressure/ related if they've done the turbos etc?

If the pipe has been replaced, is this already incorporated? Mine had the issue sorted a few years ago, but I would rather not do it again, Should I add this?

With respect, this part is £3.46 from the main dealer. B16.12.4.390.434

The replacement pipe ("Vent pipe") is B16.12.6.765.748 is £47.71

This tube is a separate part. And yes, you should fit it.

Thanks - we'll phone them later.

Okay, thanks. And it just 'slides' over the existing pipe and then down into the aperture? If it's not a mega job I'll sort that soon.

Which models are affected?

Any write up on how to do this fix? Is it straight forward/accessible?

Jack up, wheel off, arch liner out. Pipe is clearly visible running inside the arch and down into the opening (which is where it frets). The protective tube can be clipped over and slid along the length of the pipe such that it protects against that fretting action. Arch liner back in etc. Half hour, tops.

Worth noting that the replacement vent pipe has a shroud over it which may be intended to do the same job, but the protective pipe is required. It's not immediately obvious on the BMW parts system and one of the parts chaps thought the shrouding was the protective tube - it definitely isn't.

There's a cut-in for when BMW made this improvement in production, so they knew about it. I think it's some time in 2007 (but not 100%) so cars beyond then may not suffer. As it was a quality enhancement it wasn't rolled out as a recall - not perceived to be a safety issue (because fuel pooling on the floor or flammable vapours venting to atmosphere wouldn't be?!) so they left it as a gift for the rest of us to find, which we all do.

Thanks for the info. And the symptoms of an issue with the pipe is the smell of fuel, typically when filling the tank to the max?

That’s the one. In the worst case a full tank will leave a leak under the car.

Not sure! They worked through a few things before finally settling on changing the turbos!
