Hey Zippy,
Also to do with the electric thermostat that they have which changes the temperature set point. A bit like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2AfMX1PcwU

It's the other way around though:
Hotter at low load/speed for efficiency - Think hotter oil temperatures, lower friction, hotter metal temperatures, less combustion heat losses to the cylinder walls.
At high load/speed, it drops the temperature for engine protection so it doesn't over heat and also helps mitigate against things like knock

I had to jump start my E61 yesterday. While I had the bonnet open [on my E91] I noticed some leaves and gunk near the hinges so I tried to scoop them out. Then to my surprise I found a little black plastic gauze thing - on both sides. What does this do - I know it is catching rubbish - but where does it go if it is not caught - whats down there?

They stop the leaves going further down and sitting in your wings! I think the E92 M3 doesn't have them, so people by the ones for the E90/91 to stop the leaves going down!

Yup, they actually work pretty well. I clear mine out every time I clean the car or whenever the bonnet is up for any reason.

Just seen this! Cheers - yeah that makes sense, as you can see I hadn't thought it through and all I had in my mind was it actively managed temperature! I am an actual engineer, honest.

So if some of the gunk went down there can I get it out?

Not 100% but I think if you take the arch liner out you'd be able to get at it.

Currently trying to put a list togheter of all the parts I think I'll want/need for refreshing the suspension components. It's not easy! I keep losing where I've got to and the list is getting long.

Would be so much easier to just order the repair kits from BMW, but the cost would be so much more. Control arm kit alone was £115 vs. £70 for just the arm from CP4L, albeit the kit does at least include for the fixings.

BTW, from getting very familiar with RealOEM, does anyone know what the "poor road package/official unmasked vehicle" options relate to? Presumably for Police vehicles. Just wondered how they differ from the SE or MSport components.

Packs are available on eBay, for example - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FOR-BMW-3-SERIES-E90-E9...

Meyle parts normally pretty decent.

Ta. I've had too much trouble in the past with non-OEM control arms on this, so I'm going to stick to Lemforder for those, and then either the Sachs or Bilstein jobbies for the shocks. THen BMW for the fixings.

Part of the problem is deciding where to draw the line on what to replace! I mean do I go as far as subframe mounts etc? (no, i've decided on that!)

How old are the bits and pieces you're replacing?

Meyle susp stuff is rather poor quality and doesn’t last well. Lemforder is ok, though not as good as it used to be. Febi Bilstein is still ok as is TRW. Gen BMW is the best for standard bits, but costs more.

I'd imagine most of it is original. Car's a June 06 build and now on 108k. I bought it 50k and 5yrs ago

NSF had clearly had turd control arms fitted before though, and I ended up replacing both. Just replaced one again on that side to pass the MOT in December. It's not strictly necessary to do everything, but I promised myself I would last year and then never got round to it.

My understanding was that Lemforder and/or TRW were the OEM manufacturer - is this not the case?

I think you’re correct on the factory suppliers.

Cloth seats + Chrome window surrounds = odd spec.

It's alacantara interior, not cloth. Rarer than leather and preferable to some.

The shadow chrome can creak whereas the normal chrome doesn't, so maybe they chose the chrome?
