BMW pads are made by various suppliers including Jurid, Textar, Saxid, ATE and others. They often change suppliers of pads. The aftermarket pads despite being made by the same company are not the same as gen BMW ones. Gen BMW discs are often regularly changed as shown by the updated part numbers.

I thought it was illegal for BMW to stop the aftermarket selling the same parts for things like brakes under EU laws? So you can buy whatever is in their box from alternative sources supplied by the same manufacturer.

I'm looking at these ATE power discs at present and wondering whether they're worth the 50% premium over Ferodo or M-Tec.

The ATE discs are good. I had them on an E46 a few years ago. Very slightly louder than normal unlike the M Tec which are a lot louder. They ATEs are worth the extra over the MTec.

I bought ATE discs from ECP and they seem fine on the e91. Ive still not fitted them to my e61.
I also bought the more expensive variants with a lighter centre section - maybe alloy but not sure. Front and rear for the e61 which are only supplied by ATE on the ECP site. I also bought similar discs for the front on the e91 which are not correct as they are for the newer z4 35is but they are the same size. Anyway the point is this, I believe ATE to be good quality or even OEM manufacturer / supplier because they seem to be the only company which make the lighter 2 piece discs. So they are my firm recommendation for standard road work.

Pic below - you can see the little fixings which attach the centre to the friction plate.

I'm not putting the Brembos on. Will sell them.

I think drilled, and possibly grooved, overkill on the 3'er.

So it looks like the choice is grooved MTec, plain Ferodo or plain or grooved ATE. I don't know anyone who uses the ATE power disc. I don't think I've ever seen any.

Just googled ATE power disc. Did you find the brakes lacking when they worked correctly?

TBF, no. I was just wondering whether the "power disc" was worthwhile at £60 ea. Wasn't aware of road pads generating lots of gas. Ruled drilled out on the basis of the fact that every drilled disc I've had has succumbed to cracks long before they were worn out. I'm waiting to hear back from my friendly BMW dealer with is best price for the "genuine" items and have priced up ATE elsewhere, also.

As with all things, its hard to find credible independent reviews of discs and pads.

Unless it's performance items, most reviewers don't seem to care. I'd slap on Gen BMW or ATE. Brembo seem to trade on their name for not super high end stuff. The only benefit I can think of is that they come with new little retainer screws.

The "genuine" discs are about 10% more than the ATE discs on the aftemarket.

"Genuine" BMW Pad is around £72 (plus a tenner or so for the sensor)

For reference, Textar are about £45 and ATE £64

Pisses me off, the notion of paying extra for the box.

If you look up the BMW part numbers on realoem you can often find bargains on the brakes on eBay. Parts that have been sitting on someone’s shelf for a long time.

yes

That's what I spent an hour or so doing this afternoon - eBay and elsewhere. Those are the best prices I could find for "Genuine" parts.

I think the water pump curse has struck again. I must've spoken too soon.

8 mile journey home. About 1.5mi in I dropped it into manual on the approach to a d/c, and at the roundabout dropped it a couple of cogs, but noticed a real lag.

Acceleration was dimmed and it was desperate to get into 5th, even in manual mode, like it was overriding my selection. Could also hear a high whirr. So at a set of lights about 4mi in, I switched off and restarted to make sure it wasn't a glitch. It carried on though.

About this time I noticed the heaters were stone cold. I took it easy from that point. Then about 2mi from home the coolant light flashed on, in amber. About 0.5mi later it pinged to red.

4rse.

Took it very gentle to get it home, but there was no limp mode coming on. Popped the bonnet and there's coolant all around the expansion tank.
I'm guessing the pump's failed and it's blown through the cap.

So what do we reckon? Sound like the pump's gone?

Doesn't sound good OP, but you'd really need to get a code reader on it to be sure.

When the pump died on my Z4 Coupe (also N52 engine) the temperature gauge shot into the red in less than a mile (not having one on the E91 is one of the less smart features) and it did go into "limp" mode after a couple of miles.

Could it be just a split expansion tank - they're known for it, and you can't always see it too clearly.

I hope it isn't a water pump - they're not cheap!

If it is your pump then pierburg made ones are available on ebay for roughly £350. A lot better than other quotes I got when mine went.

Yes, I believe Pierburg made the OEM ones - my Indy ordered one from BMW and it cost £500! eek

But Euro Car Parts (and probably others) do the same pump for about £325.

Your Indy did quite well, BMW quoted mine something like £700 for the part. I've nevee opened the ebay app quicker...

£240 for a Pierburg is the cheapest I can see on eBay.
