E91 Straight Six Bearding
Discussion
After the recent deluge of rain today I noticed the front and rear carpets drenched in the e91 (RHS only). Damp around the bottom of the door seals would suggest they are the culprit. Sunroof seems clean and no issues there.
My BNW specialist can’t see it for 2 weeks and just taken half a tank out with my carpet cleaner…. Great fun!

If anything like the E39s and E6x cars are; the rear vapour barriers dry out behind the door card, the butyl tape fails and they let water into the carMy BNW specialist can’t see it for 2 weeks and just taken half a tank out with my carpet cleaner…. Great fun!
An easy fix (remove door card, lift vapour barriers, clean off old butyl tape, reapply mastic tape, push down to seal, refit door card etc)
This is what I used on all my E39s and it worked superbly

In non-badge news, my front undertrays had started to fall off because the original clips were rusting away. Turns out you can get nice supposedly rust-resistant ones with matching stainless bolts on eBay:
In retrospect I wish I'd gone with the 8mm hex head ones, as these need a tiny 3mm Allen key, but either way these should make future maintenance a lot easier.

The E9x undertray is a pain-another step back from the E46! I bought a used rust free tailgate this week to replace my rusty one, it’s from a 2011 320d.
Now sporting a new 335d badge. It has more scratches than mine but no rust. I can get it resprayed in the future if the scratches annoy me. I’ve stripped it for fitting now. I changed an E46 tailgate on my own. They are quite heavy! I may enlist a friend this time.

It's doable single-handed. I didn't swap the glass when I did mine, just folded it over onto a towel on the roof. The hardest part was fishing out / back in all the loom and connectors. Now sporting a new 335d badge. It has more scratches than mine but no rust. My wife is reporting unpleasant intermittent vibrations at speed.
I haven't had a chance to test it myself yet to narrow down, but from what she's said I'm wondering if it could be engine mounts.
Does that sound likely, and has anyone changed theirs? At nearly 150k miles I wouldn't be surprised if they're shot.

I’m planning on doing the glass too-I hate the fiddle of aligning the glass to the tailgate.MajorMantra said:
You managed to find an E91-sized one? When I last looked they didn't seem to exist in the aftermarket, as they're a unique size.
EBay failed. Non gen badge doesn’t fit. Found Synter Stevenage selling them online, £53. I will see if they actually have them…..Edited by helix402 on Friday 12th April 21:49

Mine were done at 156 since they needed disconnecting to do the sump gasket. Shouldn’t do a vibration though, usually the engine moves about.I haven't had a chance to test it myself yet to narrow down, but from what she's said I'm wondering if it could be engine mounts.

Sticking caliper?

In further badge news (sigh), my wife phoned BMW about getting it looked at since she was passing nearby, they said "just bring it in" and then she did, and they said "oh so we'd have to book it in for a full day and do a filmed inspection, and then send the footage back to BMW". FOR A BADGE.
Almost like the parts warranty is a bit of a con eh?

That's good to know since my sump gasket is leaking a fair bit. A job I was hoping to put off forever though. Sticking caliper?
No obvious signs of a sticking caliper, but will keep investigating. I do have a loose brake shield though, so there's an outside chance it was just that:
Gratified to note that my previous bodge on one of the other bolts has held for a couple of years:
And a nice new shiny part (I had it to hand as I ordered it after doing that bodge:
My last MOT noted misting on the front shocks and I'd say it's worse than that if anything, they definitely need changing as a fair bit of oil has leaked out.
Always something eh!
I do think about when to call time on the car as it's needed quite a bit in the last few years, but then I consider the alternatives. Other than moving to an F11 for the extra space, there's not a lot that really draws me in its class. And I do really like driving my E91. Anything newer seems to lose out on 'feel' (thanks in no small part to electric steering, I suspect).

E61A bit bigger without being massive
Still good feel and balance
Well worth trying IMHO

Funny you should say this. Just home from a 40 minute drive and the OS rear wheel is absolutely roasting hot.
Now to price up rebuild kits vs. a new caliper...
I’ve done both of the rears on mine now, and I caught them when not too bad thankfully. But they can make an awful vibration when they build pad deposits and then are trying to clean them off. Now to price up rebuild kits vs. a new caliper...
