Currently mulling what parts to order from BMW. List so far is

  • supporting ledge (for the windscreen cowl as per Sam "court_S" find about getting the seal to seal properly)
  • Handle for boot floor after kwik-st broke mine
  • filler cap - the tether went years ago but the seal is also shot now and it honks. Could replace just the seal but...
  • sound insulation for the bonnet - mine's sagging and I'm not convinced it must do much anymore. Not cheap though!!
Was also eyeing up the m performance gear knob but again they're fairly pricey items. Mine std one has started to lose its silver wrap on the top and so I'm tempted to upgrade. But you're looking at £150 if you add in the gaitor as well!

I did think about new strut braces as well as mine have started to corrode. Would be £250 for a pair though! Anyone else's have any corrosion?

And lastly, was looking at a new cowl but they're also fairly pricey. I was only looking because the clips that hold the cable ducting above the engine are all broken. The ducting stays up as there's enough of the clips left to slide on and tension of the cables holds them in place. Not sure I'm bothered enough given the cost though.

There's an ever increasing amount of NLA parts on these now though so that's at the back of my mind with a lot of stuff that's looking tired.
That’s not a bad list; I’d also be tempted to look at used parts from decent breakers. I sourced the lower part for the cabin filter for my 130i from Global Parts because of some broken clips etc.
Yeah. I'm tempted to get the bonnet sound deadening just because I can see it being one of those things that will be NLA soon, and it's not like used isn't going to be tired also.

But you're probably right on stuff like the cowl and cable ducting, and the strut braces.

E61

A bit bigger without being massive

Still good feel and balance

Well worth trying IMHO
Call me shallow but I struggle with the looks of the E61. If I ever move to a 5 it'll almost certainly have to be an F11. The petrol engine choices aren't great though, so that might mean a return to diesel (which I thought I'd seen the last of).
The F11 touring is a superb car; the N57 530D is a fantastic engine and that was the touring I really wanted to go for after selling my Jap import E39 530i Sport touring; but got won over by an F01 730D instead biggrin

There are a few F11 535i's cropping up now; that'd be hell of an upgrade on an E9x TBH

The E61 tourings have gotten better with age; but the F11 is a much better move IMO
I don't recommend that any e91 fans move on to the e61 because it looks good. It's more about the car being very similar in terms of tech and feel. If you know your way round an e91 you should feel at home in an e61. I had an f30 prior - basically brand new - and the steering was awful, really lacking in feel. The e61 is very feelsome by comparison. So if you're looking for a bigger car you can enjoy driving and occasionally have fun in then I think the e61 is a good choice. I recently upgraded or refreshed my e61 with new Meyle arms up front and the steering or suspension is super tight now. To me the e61 feels like a more grown up version of the e91. So as I said earlier...

My e61 has the big v8. So it goes very well. This slightly smaller v8 - but hardly insufficient - looks like a bargain if you ask Me. That's 330i money but looks really cheap compared to.a 335i. I actually think the v8 suits auto too so no need to wait for a manual.

£3850
Not the crazy tax bracket - 415 I think
It's a v8 - 333 bhp
The v8 Touring are super super rare
What more do you need to know?

All systems pressurised/primed, resolved a few small coolant leaks (poxy o-rings!), and finally started. Fired up on the button, and settled straight into a lovely idle. All the plumbing seems to be good, so threw the front end on.

7.5” cooler propped up, awaiting bolts to secure it!

Good stuff. It’s been a long time getting here, bet you can’t wait to actually drive it.

That intercooler is bloody massive! I thought my 5.5 inch jobbies was big when compared to the tiny stock one.

Many thanks Dan for the door vapour seal refresh tips. It has worked a treat and passed a thorough BMW specialist water test this morning.

No leaks on the LHS but have bought more mastic to do that too!

Virtual beer owed!

Hopefully have some after pics soon after raising the suspension to a less on the floor state!

Anyone had a problem with worn driveshafts? N52 2.5L on about 130k miles. Our mechanic says they're beginning to wear out and need replacing at some point.

Original symptoms - coming off a junction or roundabout, sometimes (but not always) it feels like you've come off the throttle pedal after changing gear.

Any recommendation on which brand to go for, or where to buy a pair at a decent price would be appreciated.

Not one I've heard of. Which bit is actually worn in that scenario? Kind of sounds like a slipping clutch.

Does anybody have experience of retapping sump plugs?

I can get the oil on the 330i today and the threads have gone. The frustrating thing is that I’ve always used a torque wrench when changing the oil because I’m conscious that 25NM is naff all.

I tried a different plug which seemed to get tighter but soon after adding the oil, it started to weep.

Sam I posted on your thread, but use a temp plug and then drill it and stick a larger bolt in it.

I’ve ordered a kit with some taps and an oversized plugs and washers of various sizes, so that little looks like the plan for tomorrow evening.

I couldn't understand it either. My wife drives the car most of the week, because I work from home. She says that if she is (for example) coming off a roundabout and she goes to change gear - when she comes off the clutch, its like there's no drive. No excessive revving or slipping - just a moment where it feels like something has cut drive.

Happens fairly rarely - and when I've driven the car to try and get it to repeat, I've been unable to do so.

However, we had the brake pads replaced front/rear last week - and the mechanic reckoned that on the test drive to bed the brakes in, he managed to provoke it in to happening a couple of times.

He said that he reckons its the driveshafts - due to corrosion.

But - I've not found this particular symptom pointing at their being a problem with the driveshafts (or diff). Most problems in that area seem to be noticeable because of vibrations and noises - and we have neither.

Confused - and I think we'll just carry on driving it for now - especially when I found out that the parts are £300 + VAT each side, plus fitting smile

Check the DME box for water.

Mervin’s probably on the money.

Is the mechanic saying it’s the driveshafts because of the reluctor ring issues?

Drive it with DSC off too, see if that stops it.

Is it an easy DIY job to check?

Should be. The top of the box cones off relatively easily once you’ve removed both parts of pollen filter housing. If you shine a torch down into the box you might see water.

My wife’s 330i DME shat itself last year. When I removed the actual DME, there was a white tide mark of corrosion around it.

The E91 failed on a cracked front spring last week, so I set about fitting the B12 kit I got for it last year.
Managed to do the nearside without issue, but the pinch bolt on the offside just sheared off and laughed in my face, so I can't make the re-test in time banghead

Also managed to round off one of the 3 top mount nuts, but was able to find a way to get that off.

New bolts ordered, and in the meantime I shall experiment with various ways to extract the sheared pinch bolt.

Hopefully I'll have nice handling machine afterwards, although I have a suspicion if may be too stiff for my liking.

The B12 kit has slightly better ride quality than standard sport suspension.
