I would spend the money saved on decent diesel. BP Ultimate is best, then Shell V-Power. If I can’t get those, I use Shell Fuel Save, or BP regular diesel.
What evidence do you have for that?
On premium I use either Esso or Shell (best ever diesel/whatever it’s called). No BP on my routes really.
I have worked in automotive design and testing, the last years were in fuel systems. When our fuel chemist tested fuels, she reported Shell as best, and supermarket fuel being inferior to most premium brands. BMW also recommend Shell. I have tried most premium brands in my 335d and, after reading other forums, I tried BP Ultimate. It did, as others have reported, remove any last trace of injector noise, particular noticeable at lower speed cruise control driving, when fuel is injected after coasting. It may be due to the spray pattern that is affected by additives, or by the (measured, rather than stated) cetane value. However, if is expensive and rare near me, so I use Shell (V power seems smoother and quieter than Fuel Save). I have not, and do not intend to experiment with supermarket fuels, not the least because Shell is reasonably priced and common around here.
That may be so but I did 395hp from a 2.0 TDI on standard supermarket fuel.

Without any actual facts or evidence that you would be able to share I don't think you can really say that any particular fuel is "the best".

I'd agree with Pica, my 740d xdrive gets BP ultimate or V power the engine is smoother especially on partial loading were it can be a tad rough on standard stuff even on a car as well insulated from noise as the 7, mpg is better as well.

Casual bump. I am considering the options for the thread’s original question. Anyone had anything done recently to this engine?

Hi , ( first post on PH , please be gentle with this old guy!)
Firstly, love the forums , it's great to hear honest opinions from people who actually own the car, and not just some daft kid with no licence but think he knows evrything ! )
I have a 2016 f31 335d xdrive , it has the adaptive sports suspension ( you can realy feel the diffrence in the steering feel , and suspension in sports plus ! it has the m sports plus package, giving it the 19in 255 35 19 back and 225 40 19 front , im running bridgstone potenza run flats , and it has bilstine lowering springs , it has a remap , running 384 bhp and 710 twists . no, it's not an m3 in the corners , and as for 55mpg+ ? I get 37mpg average, I stay in the highlands of scotland , and its mostly twisty b roads ! the brembo m sport break package is a big improvement! I've driven both, and mine feel far better , it stops well , and the billsine springs have greatly improved the handling, BUT !!! its a estate car ! ITS GOT AN ELECTRIC TOW BAR !!!! it can carry 5 adults , and there luggage , and on a run down to Leeds about a month ago I saw 47mpg !( but that is the only time I've seen it above 44mpg!
now as for the map ! it cost me just under £600 , the guy was great , he let me be there when he mapped it , he explained evrything he did , and he took me out 3 times in the car , first time without touching the car , then after the map ( there was a very notacible difrence from say 30 to 90 ( thats where I was most impressed ! its still very smoth threwout the range , I just has a bit more ! I cant honestly say that I've noticed any mpg diffrence , but for overtaking , and take of , it's a marked improvement!
no it's not an M car ! it's a very practical very comfortable family car , THAT JUST HAPPENS TO BE REALY QUITE QUICK ! I've only had it a matter of months , im 54 , I've had a lot of SO CALLED fast cars , but this is buy far the best all round car I've ever had ! it has a full bmw service history , 81000 miles , been garaged all its life and has a very large options list ! love the H.K music , the pro drive , the H.U.D , the breaks , the heated electric sports seats and wheel , the adaptive cruse , park assist , 360 camera privacy glass, m sport plus kit , the wheels , the adaptive suspension and the retractable tow bar .
all that for 18k !!!! what would you pay for an f80 m3 of its age and speck , mabey twice that???? and half the mpg on a good day?

I’m an old bit too and have had mine for 5 years, I’ve never owned a car for that long before, obviously they aren’t really sporty but if you are realistic about their capabilities they are great (and I can’t do a tip run or get the Labrador in the back of the Caterham!
However, I am sorely tempted by a V8 diesel Cayenne.

Had mine 10 months now. Does everything I need and want. I was set on a remap but honestly not sure I need it. If you keep your foot in it piles speed on quick enough to get you in trouble if you don’t back off.

Agree with Kelley above, they are great cars.

Ruskie, I was disappointed with the feel of my 435 when pushed, the initial surge of torque falling away quickly as revs rose, it all felt rather asthmatic at the top end, certainly in comparison to petrol turbo cars I was used to.
Most maps seemed to replicate that OEM torque curve but with bigger numbers, so I found Unicorn in Manchester who can undertake custom maps. They created a map that was stronger at all revs but majored in the mid range and top end. Now when pushing on it feels epic, just relentless, very different to the feel of the standard map.
