I bought a low mileage, very high spec M57 330D E91 M-Sport manual, earlier this year.

It has needed an aux tensioner and an alternator.

Other than that, it really feels fantastic and is doing a great job of getting me around the country. The clutch is relatively heavy though, but you know this already.

For me, reliability was key, hence M57 and manual were a winning combo.

Good luck with your search.
Thank you! Its becoming tiresome already and I got suggested a curveball of an X3 or X5 with the same engine, but I am guessing the XDrive saps a lot of the mpg?

It does make a difference for sure but the higher driving position is a nice bonus, I really liked the feel good factor when I had my X5, and when I was recently looking to get back into a SUV the X3/X5 were candidate's, but I fancied a change so went for a Mercedes GLC350d.

I'd consider taking the X3/X5 out for a run to see what you think, it's a more laid back driving experience but that can be a benefit too.

I can add that due to an unusual set of circumstances I'm daily driving a X1 ; I've been shocked how well it handles and that it's quite fun.

It's FWD bias, tho better than the previous generation X1 which was RWD, but I'm going to hazzard a guess that a RWD X3 is no less fun ;possibly more as RWD is otherwise in my experience better.

So i think it's worth trying as is fast in 30d form.

The high driving position of a X vehicle is nice, it has a feel good factor in winter and in unpleasant driving.

But as a former E92 335i owner, even if I put aside the pleasure of six cylinder petrol, you're not going to have as much fun in spirited driving.

It should come down to what you want the vehicle for.

Can the thumb paddles be changed to the other type?
They can be, but its easier to just switch a couple of wires on the left hand paddle... Now instead of "pull for up, push for down" on both paddles, i have "pull for up, push for down" on the right, then "pull for down, push for up" on the left - so its just like DSG/DCT etc, but you can still go up/down the box using 1 paddle only.
Easiest by far is to buy the paddles from an M3. Its plug and play 2 minute job even when I did it and that says a lot! Much better than having the wierd wrap around paddles IMO and no wiring changes needed!

The car is basically needing to be a swiss army knife of cars, fairly quick, economical and space for a dog(not got one yet but am planning on it), which is why I am trying to find the best one which shouldn't be breaking every 5 minutes! My other issue is that tourings seem to hold a premium over the saloons and coupes. Is it worth looking at another manual and doing the CDV "trick" to make the clutch lighter and easier to use?

Starting to describe an X5 now...

They are becoming better value and IMO have the same reliability as a 3 series. Just be careful with which wheels you have, 20" tyres are £280 per tyre!

I have had a look at a few in budget but running costs are a little bit higher than ideally I want.

Just going to have to keep looking, could take a while!

I've an '09 lci 330d MSport auto with paddles and really well spec'd. Bought in 2012 at 35k miles, currently on 113k miles. It wants for nothing and hasn't left the main dealer network yet. Service intervals are long and service pricing I think is fine - get done properly what needs doing and don't store up future probs has been my approach. Other than a couple of shocks and each of the wheel sensors going over the last couple of years throwing up all sorts of weird warning lights, its needed nothing but routine services.
Its taken me everywhere from Shetland to Portugal (not in one go..), runs non-runflats in summer, winter tyres in the cold months so comfort wise is great and with winters on can pretty much go anywhere - 4wd is a total waste unless you need ground clearance in my view. Runs notably smoother on v-power diesel and over all those miles has returned an average of 45mpg.

From time to time I think of replacing it, but I honestly can't think of anything else so universally capable, other than a touring version. Sorely tempted by 15 plate alpina d3 earlier this year but thats as close as I've come.
Fabulous cars.

Also, I feel they are better made than the F30 generation (had one as a company car). They look good, too. Shameless picture of my own:

One thing I can’t make work in my head is the electric steering in the new ones against my E91. Mine feels so much better. Would be sad to lose that to me.

I have to admit that I would love a black touring, however I may have to settle for a saloon or coupe in a different colour!

With the E9x having hydraulic steering, is there any problems with these or the steering racks leaking etc?

No problems I am aware of with leaking E91 racks or pipework.
