I don't doubt the dealer said that, first I've heard anything mentioned of it being standard though.

Back to the oil leak here. My usual mechanic has confirmed the upper right timing cover is causing it.

Premier Motors in Aberdeen reckon the job would be about £450 per bank to do the valve cover and upper timing cover gaskets.

The left hand side isn't leaking so could it make sense to only do the right hand side? As far as I can see, there's isn't a huge amount of repeat work if you were to do one side only then need to do the other at a later date.

My thinking is the car hasn't done 15k miles since the rocker cover gaskets were done (2.5 years ago), so I'm not worried about them as such. Also things like the spark plug tubes were replaced then, surely ok to re-use?
Selling the fking thing seems an even better idea.

Fancy it?

If I hadn't only had it since Christmas it wouldn't be so bad but I suspect I'd make a fair loss in that short space of time if I was to punt it.

So after getting the R/H rocker cover and upper timing cover gaskets done for knocking on £500 it then transpired that the lower oil pan had a hairline crack in it around where the sump plug's probably been over-tightened.

Now that that's been done, as if it wasn't enough, all the under-trays were off and totally cleaned last week and just today oil is starting to appear (albeit very slowly) on the underside again.

On the plus side, the warm weather means there's no hint of a cold start misfire. Outstanding. rolleyes

How far do you go before cutting your losses yet likely making a big loss in a short space of time if selling it on?

I've had a similar dilemma with my 550i. Recon gearbox, alternator seal leak, rocker leaks leading to new alternator. All over a relatively short period of time and miles (my low annual mileage isn't the cars fault, I WFH). So I've a lot invested in it now - can't bear to simply pass that on to the next person for a huge loss to me.

Having fixed all I've fixed, and the fact that driving it makes me smile means I'm keeping it a good while longer. If I'm ever in any doubt, I just go for a drive and floor it. It reminds me why I bought it and why I should keep it biggrin

A 5 just about gets away with it but a 7 isn't the type of car that encourages you to grab it by the scruff of the neck and make use of it which makes the expenditure more painful. I enjoy driving the car, it is fantastic but now I know I'd get the same type of enjoyment from one of the 'lesser' engines that wasn't appallingly designed.

Oh and the misfire appeared a couple of times again since posting that, even in the warmer weather.
