Hi guys,

Hope you can help!

I was driving my E84 X1 2.0d last Saturday 13th Jan on the motorway when suddenly the DPF light came on and the car died.

Anyway, I've had the car recovered to the BMW dealership who have said that after investigations, they are confident that the fuel has been contaminated as there is evidence of swarf in the tank which will have contaminated the majority of the fuel system. I don't have a cost of repair yet as they are still working on this but expect this to be very pricey!

I filled up with diesel (it was definitely diesel, not petrol) around the 4th Jan at a local ESSO station but unfortunately binned the receipt!
So whilst I await the bill from the dealership, would you guys suggest I do anything? The issue seems to have been from the fuel station but it was OK driving on that fuel for the best part of a week.

Look forward to any advice.

Car has full BMW service history and mileage is 90k.

Thanks

Make sure that BMW keep a sample of the fuel should it be needed in evidence.
Maybe a credit / card bank statement can prove enough that you made a purchase
surely it wouldn't have happened just to you, so any evidence of other affected motorists would be good. Maybe a local face-book group, has it been in the local paper. I'm sure a Morrisons near me had duff petrol and it was a local talking point.
Check and see if you're covered by your car insurance policy, if you have to pay.
Probably worth talking to the garage, but if you can drive a week , when did you last refuel it is possibly from a different garage. If talking to garage I'd record conversations, you never know what you'll hear. I assume you don't have a dash-cam which recorded the fill - up wink I doubt they'd keep their cctv that long!

When they say contaminated fuel, do they mean contaminated with swarf? Your car could have contaminated its own fuel system even when the fuel put in it was perfect.

What has failed on the car? The high pressure fuel pump maybe? You may be better off if you want a lower bill speaking to an Indy who will fix the car, rather than fix the car and change the whole fuel system.

Alternatively a lot of ins companies will happily pay for a main dealer to change the whole fuel system if you’ve put petrol in.

How can you prove it was THAT Esso dealer or re-fuel which caused the issue?

My wife's 2016 X1 had a fuel issue which clogged the EGR valve. Technician was certain it was supermarket fuel which caused it.
Shell, BP, Texaco since then. Strangely he gave me an odd look when I suggested Esso were up there with the best?

Thanks all.

It does say on the bank statement the date, station name and value to prove that we did fill up with diesel so at least that is something.

The dealer have come back today stating that the cost of the repair will probably in higher than the car's value. They are adamant though that it was the diesel that caused the issue.
I have asked for it to be made clear for them to clearly state that the fault was due to no internal parts failing and as of yet, this has not been confirmed. This is because the car was running fine on the diesel for about a week before it broke down.

I have also contacted the petrol station to seek advice from them. Interestingly, I visited the station for the first time today (since filling up a couple of weeks ago) and they have dismantled all of the pumps as they are now going through an "upgrade".

Car insurance will not cover it unfortunately. Although we are not covered for mis-fueling, this is not a mis-fueling issue.

I'd be asking for a sample for independent third party analysis.

Presumably there is a fuel filter between tank and engine. Why did that not catch the swarf.

Sorry, have a general distrust of BMW dealers. Contaminated fuel seems dubious to me. Does the dealer have an interest or obligation in the vehicle such as warranty ?
