Incidentally in Germany VW is a more prestigious brand than BMW.
I thought Germans were more intelligent than that, but you live and learn! laugh

I guess, like most of these lower-end 'compromised' models they exist to fit a tax an insurance category and will see service as company fleet cars and corporate taxis. Meanwhile private individuals will continue to invest in the multicylinder petrol versions. However, the writing's on the wall for diesel anyway, I guess...

It's also the opinion of someone who's never been to Germany. VWs name in Germany is currently mud, for a fairly obvious reason.

As for this 620d, whilst I wouldn't touch one myself, some people dont use the extra grunt from a 630/640, so don't see the point in paying the extra. As I said not for me, but it sells cars and enables BMW to invest in the cars I am interested in, so I don't see the issue.

Plus, anyone checked to see how this compares in performance terms to a 70s 628I?

Fair point.

That had 181bhp and could hit 134mph.

But it didn't look gopping and the 1970's were such a long time ago.

The 628CSi was an eighties BMW......

But at the time it was a pretty brisk car and certainly able to blow off a Cortina with ease. Anybody who wanted a 6 Series went for the 3.5 and there was a massive gulf in sales between the two, strongly favouring 'the proper one'.

It was introduced for the 1979 model year.

According to RealOEM, yes. But, according to realOEM, BMW were building E30's in 1981 so don't take their production dates as gospel.

Launched at the Frankfurt show in 1979 for the 1980 model year, deliveries started in 1980, not sold here until late 1980 (W). But yes, it was announced in '79. Likely that some LHD cars were built then.
