Presumably from the above both keys were in your possession? I cannot think of a way they would relay the signal without CA to manage entry, so it does point to the exterior being forced and possibly a relay box then used or obd port usage.

My 40d was nicked this time last year from the street outside my house. I think the keys were probably cloned as I believe a few X5s were targeted the same night locally. I didn't have comfort access and no signs of forced entry. Now I always keep my keys in a Faraday pouch.

I'd had a number of issues with the car due to BMWs absolutely ste preparation of it and there wasn't much fuel plus the service light had just come on so I very much hope that it fell to bits a mile down the road.

I sometimes wonder if the warranty chap at the local dealer did me a favour
