The M5 engine is based off the N63 engine, I assume it has similar issues to that, especially with the turbochargers in the bank. However, there is evidence that these are much more reliable than their predecessors.
The s63tu is based off the n63 yes but the s63tu has none of the main n63 issues and is apparently a far more reliable engine. The n63 was plagued with piezo injector failures, HPFP, breather issues and timing chain issues. Possibly others. It was a bit of a dog by all accounts and bmw US did a buyback scheme.

As for the 535d - our X5 really doesn't like short trips, and needs a long trip with good presses of the fast pedal to keep it healthy. If you're doing less than 12k a year, then they aren't worth it.
Mine takes 9-11 miles of driving in winter to get to 90 degrees, summer is 6ish miles

Rightly said. 2 mile trips are what these cars hate, which is what happens on the school run.

Keep the 535d. They are great cars and will not collapse in a smoking heap if you do less than 20k miles a year. As long as you understand them and their maintenance needs you’ll be fine.

So the water is hot, just not the oil.

The 'asking price' of that car is £10,000.
WB you're funny. Very comparable to an AUC car.

Exactly - and I never drive a car properly until the oil is fully up to operating temp. At that point then you can use all the revs

Actually the gauge on the F10 is oil not water.

Sorry I wasn’t clear mine is an oil gauge not water
