What a great car. Feels as soild now as back when i drove a 520i in 1997/98.

Mine was/is a stop gap car while deciding what to buy next....3 months later still have it and have done almost 6000 miles in it.

165k mile 3.0i sport with the auto box, apart from the poor performance from the headlights....what a lovely car to drive. It still sounds nice and the seats haven't even worn out!

A set of rear winter tyres might see me keeping it for another 3-4 months

I recently refurbed my headlights, polished lenses, new adjusters and new HID bulbs and they’re plenty bright enough now. If it’s still on the original bulbs they tend to dim over time, coupled with cloudy lenses and no wonder these things get slated for having crap headlights.

Go for all 4 corners, not just on the drive wheels...! Winter tyres on the front are as important, steering & braking is all on the fronts don’t forget... wink

I've got a set of adjusters sat on my desk ready for me to do, doesn't look too bad a job to be honest. How did you find it?

Wasn't too bad, mine is a facelift with non-removable lenses. Did it through the back without having to cut any holes etc. First one took about an hour, second one about 45 mins. Quite fiddly but not anywhere near as hard as people make it out to be. If you've made Lego Technic models or built RC cars or Airfix kits you should be fine.

I followed this guide, the photos seem to have gone though

When I had my PAS rack replaced the garage which did the job put in green hydraulic fluid instead of ATF. It assured me this was OK but I am not sure. I can't find a definitive answer online. Opinions please! I haven't done many miles since. Ta.

Nope; that sounds like CF11; it needs to be ATF

Get rid of it, flush the system and refill

That - just regular 'dex 3' ATF in both I-6 and V8 e39s.

Def not either modern VAG-style green hydraulic fluid - nor the older Pentosin CH11f (- as specced for use in many of preceding E34 series.)

Regular old 'DEX 3' ATF is dirty cheap, does NOT need to be spendy brand, and you only need what, 1.5 litres, something like that. A tenner's worth, ballpark.

Have your garage swap it!

Back when I had my E39 a genuine module was about £600. Luckily mine could be recoded, I think I paid circa £150.
Sorry for the late response. It was £1400.

Thanks. I had a feeling it wasn't correct. I'll book it in for a change at my usual dependable garage

As this thread is resurrected, I've got the Haynes manual for an E39 going spare if anyone wants - postage only?

Just found this thread and thought I’d join in with my recently imported 540i M Sport. It’s in great condition with low mileage. Having undersealed it because there is zero rust we have just started to use it from time to time for family outings. I used to own a 525d manual saloon in gunmetal grey which I picked up from NI about 10 years ago and this brings back many fond memories from then.

Does it cover the 540i engine? If so then I would take it please.

To quote the inner leaf, it only covers the petrol 6 cyliner models from 1996 to 2003 (N - 03) - 520i, 523i, 525i, 528i, 530i saloon and tourings. It doesn't cover 535i, 540i or M5 with V8 engines or diesel models.
