N47 Engine Rebuild
Discussion
Update:
Did a vacuum test on the coolant system and there was a leak. After ages of searching for the location of the hissing I found the leak coming from the EGR, specifically one of the pipe union hoses.
Engine has now been filled with new oil, oil filters etc etc. Glow plugs are now responding in ISTA and have been set up
Just got to wait for the pipe union parts and remove the EGR and install new pipes.

I bought a 2008 320d a few weeks ago (N47D20A engine) with 'head gasket' symptoms. I had hoped it would be the EGR cooler but it ended up being a cracked block. I built it into another block over Christmas and have been running it for the last week. Mine is an auto and was a pain to get lined up with the 'box when I put it back in as the crossmember/sump made it very awkward. Next time I'd pull them out together. With a manual I'd have given up and removed the 'box.
I was pleased to find the balancer shaft timing tool wasn't necessary. Mine's up to 46MPG average now which will hopefully improve with a few more miles. Not bad considering I don't have a long commute (15 miles) so a lot of that is with a cold engine.
Those are some tight head bolts too, felt so wrong stretching them that much.
ETA: In your position I would have left all the bearings and the rings alone, they should all be fine for a long time if it's had its oil changed regularly.
Is it running yet?

Update:
Coolant check passed today after I replaced the union hose on the EGR.
Topped up oil and bleed fuel system with ISTA
When finally time to start the car the engine fired up after about 5 attempts !!!! Yay!
However.....
I am getting oil pressure too low error. Oil level is just about minimum.
Going to look into this more tomorrow

All sorted.
Leaks/errors messages all clear.
Runs fine, only done about 20 miles of testing but no issues thus far. (Touch wood)
Does sound a bit louder than it used too but I assume this will be whilst the engine oils gets into all hydraulic lifters and parts. I did rebuild the engine and cleared absolutely everything, including emptying the lifters of old oil.
Time will tell.
Anyways....I now have various tools that I no longer need and I am looking to sell. Where is the best place to sell these.
I have Engine Stand, Engine Hoist, N47 Timing Kit, Piston ring pliers, piston ring comprrssor, valve spring removal/install tool, valve seals removal/install tool.

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but I am the owner of a 520d 2009, with a failed engine, though I am pretty sure mine is due to swirl flap ingestion and I am hopeful it may be just a top end issue.
I have no compression on cylinder 3 and only 120PSI on cylinder 4.
To the OP: can you give an estimate of time and costs to get the top end of the engine back together yourself? I can't justify the expense of paying someone to do it, as the car is only work a couple of grand, plus if the truth be known I quite fancy doing it myself.

Hi I have just had a engine rebuilt N43 , 3 series 320i cost £3,600, bought it nearly 2 years ago at 36K , engine seized this summer at 55K.. I wish to take the dealership i bought it from to small claims court, under the Consumer Act 2015, I am sure the fault was there at the point of sale, the dealership is giving me a hard time, saying that as it has passed it's MOT's they deny selling me a car with a fault!
Two years? Are you having a laugh? There's no way that the dealership is liable for that.
