Hi guys, I went to see a 330i touring yesterday. The car is on 108k with full history, largely main dealer. Car is in great condition looks well cared for and drives without any issue. Engine sounds fine and pulls fine.

I looked in the filler cap and can see a mark on part of the cam. I cannot feel any difference if I run my nail across this. I don't know if this is an issue or something to worry about, has anyone seen this before?

I will try to speak to a specialist today. The car checks out otherwise this is bugging me so I need to understand. I would like to think I can treat the car well and add another 50k to it.

Thanks

A mark in that direction is zero problem.

It can occur during manufacture and may have been on that car from day 1.

It can also appear on the cam bearings themselves and is usually just a visual artifact from the grinding process.

Even a deeper groove in the cam lobe or cam bearing would be of little concern, and can in fact be advantageous in terms of bringing more oil to the contact point between the cam and the rocker arm.

A deep scratch across the cam lobe or cam bearing is a whole different matter and could damage the oil film and accelerate wear.

In short, this is no problem for the example you have shown.
