F30 320D first service at 42k miles???

Sounds like the first service wasn't done by BMW. Then presumably the iDrive service interval was reset, but since the service wasn't done by BMW it won't be showing in the service history. As a few posters have mentioned 18k miles is about right for the first service.
I had a similar experience last year looking at a 2016 e220d with 45k miles. It had no Mercedes History whatsoever, but the OBC wasn't indicating a service is due. So it was only fair to assume servicing had been done but just outside the network.
This is the trouble with modern cars as there is no longer a service book, it's very easy for history to go missing! Invoices etc are good until the car goes through an auction and they all get binned due to GDPR..
