The chain was put at the back to lower the profile at the front of the engine to help meet crash regs with the space under the bonnet to top of the engine
Right, so there was some logic involved - just a shame they used such a cr*p chain. banghead

Thanks anyway. thumbup

It’s not the chain, it’s those stupid plastic guides. The tensioner eats it until it hits maximum extension, then you have slack in the chain and a ticking time bomb

The chains do actually stretch too. I did my dad's vw polo last year and it was stretched a whole link when it was placed next to the new one. Kinda mad but explains how it was coming up with cam and crank sensor fault. These chains will all be the same crap.

My wife’s 116i had the timing chain replaced by BMW FOC whilst it was in for a recall for something to do with the brake vacuum. Can’t remember the exact details, but something faulty had supposedly caused the chain to stretch so they replaced it for us.

On a 10 year old car with a ropey service history, I was very happy with the service provided!

Have you checked the gov.uk website to see if this recall is applicable for your car at all?

Charlie.

I did check when I bought the car and there was which it has been in for but they didn't tell us what it was they did. My misses asked for a break down of what they did which they said they would email it to her which they never did. I will have a look now.

No recall on the car now.

One thing I have thought of is that the oil coolers seals went 2 months ago so I took the under tray off to clean it after I had done the seals but I've not put it back on. Wonder if the sound is louder with the cover off so making me think it's got worse. I only drive the car once or twice a month. My misses wouldn't notice a cow she had driven over under the car 😁.
