New 320d makes peak power at 5,500rpm
Discussion
Strange, I've done more than a few miles in a 220i with the same engine, albeit in a slightly lighter car. Whilst it wouldn't keep up with my 125i it seemed to have more than enough grunt to get a move on, whilst also avoiding the "skeleton wking in a biscuit tin" acoustics I've had from every 320d I've ever driven.
Mind you, when someone claims it's now a Twin Turbo and revs to 5400 rpm I think we can safely ignore the rest of their post....

I’ve currently got a 22 plate 420d loan car while my 330i (B48 engine) is in for yet another breakdown.
The 2.0d is really not a nice engine. The immediate pickup is good, but it lacks refinement & vibration can be felt through the floor and the controls.
The B48 isn’t as refined as a nice 3.0 6, but it’s way ahead of the B47 in the 420d. No way would I go back to diesel.

All four cylinder diesels are horrible, with really very marginal differences between them at this point. Getting people to accept such a coarse and unpleasant power unit as appropriate in a car that costs more than buttons is the biggest con among many that the "premium" Germans have pulled.
There is a good reason they don't exist in parts of the world where people weren't forced into them by punitive tax structures.
