Hi all,

A few months ago I was driving my 116i e87 2010 and white smoke appeared in my rear view mirror due to a load of oil spill on to my exhaust. The engine sounded very rough and obviously stopped using it since.

I put an OBD code reader in today and came up with P0015 which comes up as a failure with the camshaft position sensor- retarded timing bank 1. Is this what's causing the rough engine and oil leak by my manifold area? Has this caused damage to my engine? Or will a new CMP sensor generally set everything back to how it was?

Appreciate any replies.

Cam sensor fault and oil leak will be two different faults.

The cam sensor fault may be due to causes besides the sensor itself such as faulty timing chain or vanos solenoid or pulley.

Best bet is to get it diagnosed before throwing parts at it.

Be aware that the N43 is very prone to problems and oil leaks. It was made near Birmingham.

If your using a code reader to diagnose an oil leak then I’d kindly suggest getting a mechanic to look at it.

But if u are really keen then have a look in the engine bay and look for the highest point on the engine that has oil spillage on it- this is probably going to be the source of the leak. Tbh it’s probably your chain tensioner - they can work themselvess loose, tighten up or get a new one and top up your oil and then see how it runs- ignore the cam fault code till u have at lest done this

The tensioner was loose and also the chain, I've tightened the tensioner bolt best i can but do I need a new chain? Or is there something else I can check on as I don't fancy pulling apart the engine.
