What do people consider to be the “must have” specifications? The way the options are packaged means I’m currently ticking them all, which is going to add a fair chunk to the cost. Laser lights a nice to have? I have adaptive LED on my current touring and they are great - so wondering if Lasers are worth the extra cost. Black line pack, or whatever it’s called, seems just cosmetic and might not bother.
Tech pack is probably the most important (HUD plus HK audio)

I also have premium pack, which was less necessary (sunrooof and electric seats)

Comfort pack is unimportant, apart from steering wheel heating.

I have the m-tech pack, but its probably unnessary

Didn't bother with lazer lights, which is fine as the standard LED's are awesome. I had 'magic' adaptive headlights in my M5 and dont miss them much.

Steering wheel heating. Now I’ve had it I’d prefer to keep it. It came in a pack and was a pleasant surprise when I discovered it.

I wouldn't have specced up the Comfort Pack myself, but now I've got it I'd recommend as it worthwhile - steering wheel heating is so nice on frosty mornings, you get the extended storage and, to my surprise, I actually find the powered bootlid nice to have. I'd say it's worth ticking for the money.

It may be of interest to some that I read the the 2019 3 series has scored exceptionally well with NCAP. It's best in class in adult and children crash testing. Safer than any SUV in fact.

The 3 series and Tesla model 3 share the top position for NCAP in terms of all cars on sale today.

It is also top for What Car / Thatcham:

The existence of the G2x 340d has been known about for a little while but are you saying it's now confirmed it will go on sale in the UK? If so what's the source for that information?

A dealer mentioned it in passing. Apparently the X5 will get the 40D added at the same time.

Given the reported real world performance of the petrol at circa 40mpg and the stigma surrounding diesels its going to be a tough sell.

Can I ask why people buy the saloon?

I don't get saloons at all.

Touring feels a bit of a q car and practical, coupe always looks cooler. Saloon I just don't get.

My wife hates estate cars. I think they are very practical. Not sure really, never been drawn to them. I have young kids, a coupe would be nicer to look at but a ball ache with the seats.

Don’t get it then. I have saloons:-
Look better (estate looks like a shackled-by-family owner)
Can carry long loads too.
The only stuff it cannot carry, I would have delivered anyway.

I don’t get estates at all. They look awful and exist for sales reps carrying samples and stuff.

Each to their own.

Interesting answers, very defensive. Haha

Funny how we all perceive things.

For me the saloon is the old man whose family has left home, too old for Mountain Bikes and boards so no need for an estate, or the sales rep.

"Boss can I have the coupe?"
"No, wrong image"
"What about the estate?"
"Is it the same price?"
"Well, no."
"No you can't then."

I wish I liked them more, used they are so much cheaper than the estates.

Having said that, I think the F10 and the G20 are actually really good looking saloons, F30 too for that matter. But so many cars over the years I have preferred the estate or coupe design wise by a very long shot, rather than any real preconceived opinions about image.

I should just say, the only reason I asked was when I see the thread "M340i" I don't even consider people are even talking about the saloon, it was the quotes above that made me think about.

Prefer the look of the estate, but I have a saloon 'cos

1. Don't need an estate
2. Noisier inside (perception, not sure if true)
3. Saloon practical enough, back seat folds
4. Wife doesn't like estates
5. Cheaper

I never really thought about the estate when buying TBH.

I on the other hand would argue the Touring doesn't really drive any differently from the saloon (or indeed the coupe) but offers much greater practicality and versatility. In terms of looks I don't think the saloon is better than the Touring either but, as you say, each to their own.....
