Hopefully some of our in-house 340i owners can help me out. My current '09 E91 330d has recently trundled past 200k miles and I'm getting the car change itch. I've had it for 7 years and 150k in which time it's been pretty much faultless (one thermostat, one oil filter housing, one full set of pads and discs and a rear wiper spigot); it's served me extremely well and gives no indication that it won't continue to do so. However I'm bored!

I need an estate car to do 25k/yr in, entirely funded by me. The obvious answer is simply another 330/335d, however I'm desperately trying to justify something that engages my inner idiot a little more. 70% of those miles are commuting which entails 100 miles journeys on the M40, mostly at times of day with little traffic. I've done some forum trawling but inevitably encounter a wide range of answers in relation to 340i mpg ranging from '40 mpg on a run' (which seems highly improbable unless these people don't exceed 50mph) to '23mpg at best' (which I suspect requires short journeys and a very heavy right foot).

With that in mind I wonder if anyone has real world experience (ideally from genuine fill ups rather than OBC optimism!) of what sort of fuel economy could be expected from a 340 on single motorway journeys of 100ish miles cruising at an indicated 80mph? As a matter of interest my current car has averaged 43mpg over the last 120k (as calculated by me). On a tank involving exclusively the journey profile I've just described it returns about 46mpg.

As a matter of interest I'd also be keen to hear the same info from 330/335d owners, thanks.

F30 335D, I changed the OBD coefficient to ‘1065’ to get it accurate.

Working on litres used against miles covered though, best so far is 552 miles from a tank at 47 mpg, which was Four decent motorway runs, with the speed limiter set to 77 mph ( I don’t know why smile )

Worst tank full so far is 32, but my commute is only 12 miles each way, so a lot of my averages are 32-35, travelling on 30 or 40 mph roads across city, traffic lights etc.

F31 335D doing your distances, I’d guess high 30’s to low 40’s.

On an 80 mph run you're going to be looking at mid thirties mpg wise. I've not had my F31 340i that long, but when I've done a significant run at 73 mph on CC, it returned 39.6mpg and another at 77mph and that netted me 37.7mpg. Upping the pace will see that drop a bit more I'd guess, If I could stick to 70mph on CC I think 40 mpg is easily do-able.

Most of my driving is in rush hour traffic though, and that means I normally get 31 mpg on my 15 mile commute; I previously got 48 mpg on the same commute in my old E90 320d.

I always measure my cars on cost per mile.
I can't talk about m/way , but at the opposite end of the spectrum a lot of hard urban runs, during it's 3.5k miles in my ownership my 340i costs 24p per mile.
My X1 drive 20d cost 15p, so that's only 9p difference for a fast petrol; or £1800 over my 20k p/a

I can only imagine a 335d drive would be less than 9p difference.

No brainer for me.

2017, F31, purchased at 19k miles.

Same engine, but in a 1 series.

On the motorway they’re surprisingly frugal sat at 75 with cruise on, a bit more so if you select eco pro. That changes quite quickly though once in an urban environment or using the power.

My average over seven months is 30.8mpg. That includes my commute three times a week which is 30 miles each way, mostly on dual carriageway and some fast, fun drives out.

A colleague has an M140 also an managed 40 on a sensible run to Norfolk last year.

2018 F31 340i - bought with 1,300 miles, now at 4,300. I'm generally a pretty sensible driver, put my foot down a bit but like to see some high numbers on the MPG when going places.

Town driving it sits somewhere between 22-28 mpg. On the motorway though, between 75-80 it cruises well and I see between 35 and 37 mpg. This is on winter tyres.

Doing 70 on a very clear motorway you might see 40 average but to be honest I think that might be a tiny bit of a stretch even on summer tyres. Essentially I'd budget on mixed driving to be somewhere between 31 and 35 depending on the mix.

Mine as the gas particulate filter, not sure if that drops the mpg at all.

Edited to add - I've done fill to fill checks and the trip computer on mine is pretty much accurate.

2016 F30 340i . I do a regular trip to Oxford about 57 miles from home. The best MPG I ever achieved using Shell V power fuel on a Motorway was 41.6 with a very light foot in ' Comfort mode ' at national speed limits. I was quite impressed with that to be fair.

I was even more impressed when it was fully loaded with 3 Adults the Grandson / Top Box and a full boot. travelling down to Cornwall .

265 miles averaging 34 MPG using three Motorways and the A30.

Appreciate I don't have a B58 powered car so my input is pretty pointless.

However, I do have an N55 powered M235i which is by all accounts less efficient, yet I regularly get 35-38mpg on long motorway runs sitting at GPS indicated 77mph. I've even seen over 40mpg occasionally when encountering the 50mph stretches of the M62/M6 hehe

I've averaged 25.6mpg over 22,000 miles, that includes a lot of spirited driving, mixed in with some big motorway stints.

Always use comfort over eco-pro, it's actually more efficient and avoids the impossibly slow throttle response.

M140i here, my record on a run (~140 miles of motorway) is 48.6mpg indicated thanks to heavy use of average speed cameras.
Brim-to fill record is about 40, though I more typically manage ~30 (albeit with a typical driving profile biased towards shorter runs these days).

440i GC - average around 29-30mpg over a tank.

Hit late 30s usually on motorway journeys and have seen 44mpg once!

Great engine.

F31 340i, has done 52,000 miles, 70ish% of which are quiet B road commute (so not “economical” in terms of mpg!).

Average over life is a smidge over 32mpg.

Long mway runs do well over 35mpg easily, often more (although mainly due to the seemingly massive amount of UK mways that are 50mph speed limited these day!)

It’s a great all rounder and I love it (and the 335i I had previously)

But what about depreciation, your biggest cost?

Not to pour scorn on this but I genuinely don't know that I'd be able to get anywhere near 46mpg in mine, unless a long, clear drive on a motorway at 50. 36 is around the best I've seen on a long journey, so far. Driving it to the Alps in Feb though so might be able to report back after that.

Ditto for me. When I was on the mway earlier in the week I tested mine for 3 junctions of completely clear road (also 3 jnc's that happen to be very flat) and was getting 39>41mpg at 80mph (on cruise control); but I was already up to speed for all of that, so I fail to see how it'd get anywhere near 46mpg without sitting at <65mph and the OP was asking about driving at an indicated 80mph.

I think it depends on how you decide the truth. Most people like to report the most optimistic mpg IMHO, which is the onboard trip.

On long motorway journeys with the benefit of average speed cameras for lots of it (think M1/M6) then 40+mpg is possible according to my trip. The effect of speed can also be easily observed and upping speed from low 70s to low 80s will drop it by quite a few mpg. Probably 5mpg. You can also drop it an mpg or so if you switch on the a/c.

I really only believe brim to brim figures though, a tankful picks up all the other stuff that happens in daily life. In my 15000 miles from new I'm getting an honest 32 to 34 mpg with mostly motorway driving (LTA speed is about 50mph). That's running on 95RON, it gets a bit better with 98RON (two mpg at most)

I've yet to drop below 29mpg on a tankful, that involved town driving which isn't its forte.

It's much better than my old scoob which struggled to get over 25mpg, and that's with another 500kg and 120bhp onboard.

Indeed.

I’ve just done my first 11k miles and am averaging 26.6mpg - mix of motorway and city.

My suspicion is perhaps those pushing high 30’s ain’t seeing the red line too much...

Just as a heads up re M340i not 340i joe achilles in his vid said he was getting 39mpg on his journeys around the M25 whereas same journeys in his M2 comp showed 25 mpg...so that M340i is pretty economical.

Recently made the switch from F31 330d sdrive to F31 340i. Was expecting a 10mpg drop in economy, but in reality its been:

330d 102 tanks, 42,000 miles: 40.1mpg
340i 5 tanks, 1200 miles: 26.2mpg

Lots of short, cold town journeys over xmas which seems to clobber the economy even more than the 330d, but hoping this will improve over long journeys and warmer weather. As per comments above, I can easily get an indicated 36-37mpg on a long run.

I mean I keep seeing 23mpg on mine which is around town admittedly and maybe 34 on a motorway run. I reckon I am more heavy footed than most though when setting off it would seem. I'm at about 16k miles now. Maybe I'll reset my trip computer and see what happens. Amazing car though!
