I'd say it's only driving the car off my drive as opposed to driving it onto the drive. I'm handing mine in on Monday so let's see what they find! I hope they don't come back saying there's nothing wrong with the car.

I think the lady who booked me in over the phone at BMW said it was Enterprise who provide the loan cars. But she did say because you're handing an 8 series in they would have to give you something similar. If they don't then i'll be taking it up with the dealership.

Anyone waiting for a software update tried this?

https://discover.bmw.co.uk/technology/software-upd...

Not sure how quickly or regularly the updates are listed but might be worth checking.
It used to be the Bluetooth module and on my i8 it didn’t work even though it offered a download. Not tried it on the 840
Just done it on our recently bought m2, just did the comms update like you say, bit pointless. On the plus side, got our free map update in before it runs out in November.

On the 840i, hopefully being delivered 2nd September, and it's been given a 70 plate.

don't know if any other previous BMW owners are feeling like this but 2 months in with new car and im bored....the car is really refined and not as edgy as other models ive driven, some even with less power.

I do find it quite uncomfortable compared to the V12 E66 we had. But it doesn't throw up random faults that cost me a grand a time.

My daughter gets car sick in it and would rather go in our Defender when we go out rolleyes

I don't care for all the tech, probably because I'm too old for it.

New JCW was panned by Catchpole but that aside

Back to the question, the 8 series is a grand tourer with a bit more driver appeal and less “grandad“ than a 7 and more style and sophistication than a 5. I don’t believe ‘edgy’ was ever a design aspiration.

That’s absolutely my understanding too, and a good description of where it fits.

I guess an M8 might add some edginess, if it seems lacking?

Really enjoying the car but given the styling and size, I think it would have benefited from having the B58 engine that goes in the M340i. This would probably bring it sub 5s to 60 and give it the performance to match the looks. if BMW did that though it would probably cannibalise any sales of the 850.

Called BMW UK about the android auto update and they said it would come through OTA before the year end - nothing more specific than that.

Erm.. what engine do you think the 840i has? Everything I've read says it is a B58

The M340i is a more powerful version of that engine

Yeah, it would definitely benefit from the additional 50hp. Are there any physical differences or is it all just in the ECU??

Correct... and the M340i has x drive as standard, it needs it to help put down the extra power. It maybe the 840i was marketed to keep the rear wheel drive purists happy but it certainly carries less weight without the x drive and almost a perfect front to rear weight ratio. At the end of the day its a Grand Tourer designed to eat up miles across a continent as its certainly comfortable on long motorway journeys. ( That maybe a struggle if your on 5K miles a year ! ) I for one enjoy the car everytime I get in it and I certainly do not find it boring.... agreed its not for everyone, which for me is a big attraction in itself !

My mistake on missing the engine point. Don't they tune engines for different characters, often a bit more torque low down at the expense of power, different exhaust tuning, gearbox maps for different character? Either way I've seen remaps that get it to 400bhp fairly readily if thats your thing.

Don't all the petrol cars have the limited slip diff as standard, thats going to help with traction and the reviews I've seen suggest the lighter front make it a much more enjoyable drive. I'm perfectly happy with ours.

It might be standard in some markets, but I think in the UK you have to spec the M Technic Pack to get the funky diff.

I have the M tech pack on my GC but I was pretty sure the LSD only an option on the Coupe and Conv and diesels, but as I've been wrong once today I'll defer to others!

Oh, OK, so what’s in the M-Technic pack then?

The M340i version of the B58 is quite different and doesn’t have the “headifold” twin exit cylinder head.

The electronic diff is indeed standard on UK cars at least. The M technic pack adds styling and interior stuff, extra cooling and bigger brakes.

Ok, you all seem to feel it’s standard and not part of the M-Technic pack. I just wonder why BMW say different...
