Hi,

Quick question, I’m looking into buying a caravan but I can’t find anywhere that will do a towbar for my 840gc. Does anyone know if my 840gc can get a towbar fitted?

Cool, was just wondering when it would be taken - it's been nearly 2 months since I got mine.
I've had mine taken. I received an email invoice stating the amount and date that it would be taken about 2 weeks before.

So weird thing with mine today, all 4 tyres reported low tyre pressure, so off to the local petrol station, added air to the back tyres all ok. Could not for the life of me get the front to take the air adapter. just wouldn't seal properly and kept letting the existing air out. Tried 3 petrol stations and got down to 7 psi.

Called BMW Assist, who were totally useless, refused to assist in any way unless the car was uplifted.

Called the aa, no problem sir will be out in a couple of hours, put in the air and all good. Suspect the valves are a bit low, He had to screw in the adapter to get it to seal properly

laughably got a survey from BMW service "how did we do " guess what? you were crap! third BMW on the trot and not very impressed. The previous service has always been good.

I wanted a towbar for a bike carrier, so enquired before ordering the 840iGC and was told that one cannot be fitted unfortunately. The deal was so good I went ahead anyway and use my other car for carrying bikes, but I am pretty sure the answer is no.

Two things I think I'd like to change on the car... Firstly I'd like the option to adjust the seatbelt height on the B-pillar (in addition to the B-pillar trim staying where it's supposed to; I caught it with my shoulder the other day and it came away again...). Secondly I'd like the rear-view camera to turn off the moment you take it out of reverse - currently it stays on the screen even as you pull forward. It very nearly caught me out earlier on doing a 3-point turn as I was contending with traffic which suddenly arrived. I was waiting for cars to go and hadn't realised I hadn't taken it out of reverse back into 'D' and went to 'go' - only to find myself moving backward... eek

Entirely my fault but in the midst of dealing with everything going on I made an error. Luckily nothing came of it but I can see now how easily people (especially older ones) can accidentally end up accelerating the wrong way. It made me realise that if the rear-view camera picture disappeared immediately it would be very clear you're no longer in reverse.

A small thing and entirely my own fault - luckily I got away with it this time and a lesson learned!

Agree on the reverse cam thing. I guess it so it doesn't flick on and off when doing a 3 point turn but I'd also rather it went off straight away as a visual clue to what gear you're in!

Lads,
Loaded my Leasys app and saw excess charge was 29p. I asked if this was with or without VAT.
They corrected me saying it's 40.96p as everyone was told originally. Disappointing.

Also confirmed for me that I can't add miles until a year into the contract

Those who paid for 8k. What's your monthly fee?
Want to increase potentially and don't want to get ripped off.

Can someone take a picture of this B pillar issue please? Want to make sure mines alright.

Those using the reverse assistant. Remember it only does steering. Don't expect the car to stop once it reaches its destination. Nearly got caught out with that one!

I'm on 8k pa and a 3+23 deal; the monthlies are 403.97.

Can't help you with the B pillar as mine seems ok, and I haven't worked out the parking and reversing assist as I never feel the need for it. Will bear it in mind if i ever use it!

When I first took the car Leasys sent me a paper copy of their agreement / contract which states excess mileage at a rate of 26ppm plus vat ( 31.2 PPM inc vat ) but on the carsave contract it stated 37.2PPM in vat. I queried this and was informed the Leasys rate was correct. I was also told you cannot adjust the mileage term until the first year had passed and also that it would be unlikely to be cheaper than paying the excess mileage rate.

I managed to get an order in on an agreed 12k where as my first choice would have been at 10k. What with covid, I'm likely to do more like 6k a year now! Shame you can't have some of my allowance!

In fact, that raised an interesting theory in my head... Wonder how practical/worthwhile it would be to swap leases with someone?!

Excess mileage on my contract is 40.96p

My original quote for 8k miles was £404 on a 3+23.

The B-pillar issue is this bit:

The leather-clad part with the stitching attaches to the upper part where the belt passes through (using BMW part no 07147321144). The top of the upper trim slides in and upward by the roof and the part with the stitching has two plastic trim clips (part no 07149288827) which then clip in to the metal of the B-pillar behind.

The problem I have with the design is that because I have longer legs I have the seat a long way back and set low, which means that it's right in the way when getting in and I've caught it with my right shoulder several times. You can see how much it stands proud here with my seat where I have it:

The trim clips aren't very strong (and there's only the two of them) so the trim comes away all-too-easily. I suppose it's better than something else in there snapping but the design is poor in my opinion. BMW could have chamfered that edge on the B-pillar more and changed the shape on the top of the door edge to compensate. The issue with it repeatedly coming away is that it'll eventually weaken or snap the clips. I've got a couple of spares from BMW now so I can replace them myself if required. Put it this way - in 20+ years of driving numerous cars it's never been an issue on any of them before and this has come away several times in the first few weeks I've had the car.

I'm pleased to report that other than that, the car's been fine though.

Also re. your other point about parking assistant - I'm almost certain it stops itself, I'll have to test it out when I'm next in the car.

I have been told exactly the same. Fortunately this is by email from Leasys so if they were to try and charge more than 26p+VAT, I will rely on this email conversation and not pay more. I am in the process of exceeding my stated 10k per year- probably doing something like 12-13k, so it clearly wouldn't be reasonable of them to change their mind after I have taken them at their word.

Yeah, the excess rate is insane, that's why I bumped mine up to 10k/yr and I'm sure it can be increased in year 2 if required. That said, I've done less than 1,000 miles since taking delivery at the end of July so it may not be an issue...!

I’m doing about the same mileage extra over you are so I’ll wait to it’s anniversary to take a view if it’s a problem or not.... if I’m honest apart from a a couple of rare business trips most of the mileage I’ve done is just pure pleasure driving eg I’m just popping out for a loaf ..... 2 hours later !! ;-)

I know the feeling - I think it's a fabulous machine. Something that size shouldn't be so much fun, but somehow they have made it rather chuckable. It's going to be a tough act to follow, particularly at the price!

Although the excess mileage is high it's cheaper than the mileage rate on the monthly payment

That's true but that is to be expected given the monthly payment includes age depreciation which happens irrespective of mileage. I believe when people were comparing the mileage on different contracts, it was somewhere in the region of 18-20ppm difference between a contract on say 8k miles a year and 10k miles. 41ppm (the G2L figure) is just insane for a car like this. I think I can live with 31ppm (the Leasys figure) though.

Very much. I thought it was just me that could possibly describe this monster as chuckable but I totally agree. I definately think its a fun drive and a very nice place to sit your ass too. The car has surpassed my expectations in so many ways, and definately a great car to live with in a way never captured in a short term review.
