speaking of suprises my tyre pressure warning came back on again, no doubt due to the cold weather and each time it comes on it it recommends a different pressure so no change there... easy enough to deal with but just another little irritant of this car

The pressure takes into account the ambient temperature and the tyre temperature, especially if you've been driving it. You can code in to see the temperature as well as pressure which is useful

Its the first car I've ever owned where the target pressure is suggested to you on the screen and adjusts like this. Its actually really useful as pressures are traditionally set when cold, but if you want to top up your tyres when out and about the pressure on the door car/manual are wrong because the tyres are warm, on the dash they adapt and so they're right.

From the manual:

Target pressure
The target pressure for the tires on the front and rear axles is displayed. The specified target pressures take the influence of driving operation and external temperature on the tire temperature into account. The appropriate target pressure is always displayed, independent of the weather situation, tire temperatures and driving times. The displayed target pressure may change and may differ from the tire inflation pressure details on the door pillar of the driver's door. The tire inflation pressure can thus be corrected to the value of the displayed target pressures. The target pressure is immediately adjusted if the vehicle load is changed in the tire settings.

Whats everyones thoughts on Android Auto? I only tried it once when I had my S5 and I just got round to setting it up on the 8 series and again, im not sure what advantage it presents. I can do everything via connecting to iDrive on bluetooth and using the inbuilt Spotify app.

Anyone a fan if it?

I don't use Spotify, I use amazon music sometimes, Google podcasts app too. I also prefer Google maps to the bmw navigation, WhatsApp notifications come through and are read out and can be replied to using voice.

I see the benefits over not having it!

Nice one. It seems a bit random which RWD cars work well in snow.
My Monaro (with quite aggressive locking diff) was hopeless but my open-diff Z4C was fine. Both had Eagle F1 asymmetrics on too. Must have been a weight distribution thing. Or possibly the BMW had traction control that actually worked.

Google Maps is way nicer for navigation but the biggest advantage is voice control that actually works using Google Assistant. It can also read out things like Whatsapp messages (and allow you to dictate a reply) which the BMW system can't do.

I rarely find myself in the BMW system when driving now; in fact it would make a lot of sense for BMW to do away with their own in-house iDrive and just build a system around Android and IOS where you just choose which one you want when setting up. The car could then just get added to your devices in your Google account just like a new phone or tablet would and you can run all the things off one single unified platform (although ironically that would cause issues for apps like Whatsapp that are tied to your mobile phone. hehe

O/T: That said, with the new privacy changes Facebook are enforcing I think we'll see a significant migration away from Whatsapp over the next year or two.

I was one of the very early adopters of Whatsapp and it pissed me off no end when they sold out to Facebook. I don't have a Facebook account and never will. I'm already teeing up people that at some stage I'll be on Signal fully (I have that and Telegram running alongside Whatsapp currently). Once Whatsapp renege on the current exemption of the UK/EU data-sharing due to privacy rules (which they will) and start sharing ever-increasing user data with Facebook I'll be gone.

For now, it looks like despite having to agree to the new privacy policy, Facebook won't actually get any more data from Whatsapp at present due to UK/EU regs but given how they've gone back on the original promise of 'it'll always be separate' to 'you have to agree to it or fk off' it will happen at some point in the not-too-distant future. No bad thing in my view really; there are plenty of other options out there and anything that decreases Facebook's data monopoly is a good thing.

I absolutely love these cars. Got to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing cars on the road. It's perfect from every angle.

If I'm in the same position in a couple of years time and I don't end up going full sports car, I'd really consider buying one.

Is there any idea on what the 2-3 year old <15k mile price would be? Autotrader has tons of 2020 / 5000 mile examples for ~55k.

Been enjoying the B58 in my 440i, so would be keen to go the same again. Does the engine power feel a little muted in such a large car, or is it still rapid? From what I can gather it's only got 10bhp more than the 440i.

I am assuming the interior quality is a big step up... it certainly looks it from the pictures.

How usable would you owners say the back seats are?

Thanks for the feedback on AA. I will have more of a play around with it at the weekend.

Depreciation is hard to tell - they suffer the curse of expensive BMWs in that the list price is stupidly high and discounts are easy to get, Broadspeed list a base 840 GC as being 56k after discount, and while most used cars have the odd option, 55k is not a lot of depreciation from an actual purchase price (ignoring list). When I had a 6GC that was losing around 6-7k a year, I imagine the 8 won't be much different.

The B58 suits the car in my opinion, its not rip your face off fast, and its a lovely thing to rev out. I can't say I felt it struggle, but power is something you get used to. The 8 is my wifes, I have a Tesla P90D with ludicrous and sub 3s to 60 and to drive I prefer the 8 series, its just a shame 30mpg is only ever seen on a decent run.

I've seen reports (probably in this thread) of issues with the b pillar cover coming off and problems with rear diff, but I've not had any problems and I feel its well built. They use the same production facility as the 7 series which is their premium factory and I understand they do things a little bit more meticulously accordingly, whether thats true I don't know but would make sense. The car is full of little details you notice over time. There's a faint double crease line down the side that is echo'd on the passenger side of the dash, the interior mood lighting on the door flashes red at night when you open the door, the ideal tyre pressures adapt to take into account if you've been driving rather than a fixed cold temperature pressure, they're doing software updates and you can now programme the seat heating or cooling to come on automatically etc.

Back seats in the GC seem fine, I've had them occupied a couple of times by adults without complaint, not sure the same can be said for the coupe.

Car looks stunning in the snow - glad to hear you’ve had no traction issues as I’ve been nervous about that coming from a A6 Avant Quattro - I’ll be taking pics when the white stuff arrives

There were some traction issues, but it managed. I wouldn't be taking too many snowy adventures with it! Hitting the traction control button so it is in dynamic traction mode helped and steady with the throttle.

I had a 318 a few years ago, I used to throw some concrete blocks in the boot when it snowed, I never had a problem. It had a bit less power though!

Does anyone know how to trigger the app to download the software upgrade? Got car back from BMW Chigwell and they still haven’t updated the software even though they said they did a software update. F****n numpties.

They also said the could not replicate the rear diff issue and found nothing wrong. Idiots

In the car there’s an option somewhere to search for software updates under settings - can’t remember exactly where.

It's under the settings menu at the bottom. 'Check for update'. I think you'll also get notification on the BMW app. Mine downloaded to there and then synced across to the car from the phone.

I’ve done all that. It downloaded but then doesn’t initialise. So the installation never actually happens. We’ve discussed this few pages back

Sorry, you asked earlier about triggering the download; I figured the dealer may have reset your iDrive but not updated it. I think the only thing you can do is wait for it to do it itself or get the dealer to do it. Why wasn't it done properly when they had it in? Take it back to them and tell them they didn't do what they said they did...

Wes traveling up north yesterday (interview for son’s job) all was good until traffic stopped on a42 where it joins m1, then got stuck and required a few kind came and gave a shove.

To be fair everyone was struggling, should have taken the Ranger Rover

Driving back today was fine as most snow had gone

I still have an intermittent problem with the music system loosing all bass from start up - some times you get in all is fine, other times you just have tinny music regardless of which source. Its now happening more often than not so I may book it into the dealer but that's such a fath at the moment - any one else had the same issue and found a fix ? I'm thinking its the way the phone connects to the car but I really don't know as I've tried various ways to fix and nothing works.... I can only leave the car and next time I come back to it hope it fixed itself with now limited success :-(
