For me, the 840i was never a car I would have chosen purely on its own merits - I would never have afforded , or at least valued, the car at what it would have cost me to buy/PCP at the time. I was drawn in by 'the deal', and the bargain opportunity that presented! That said, it was a brilliant experience and I really enjoyed the ownership and no regrets. It was still slightly on the big side (for parking in a multistorey every day) and despite its size, the lack of a hatch/estate wasn't hugely practical for my use. If a big saloon suits your needs then I would heartedly recommended it at today's prices, particularly the '40i which for me was a perfect blend of performance/economy.
I think that's a pretty good summary.Edited by Benito88 on Tuesday 20th December 21:35
I got myself another 8-series this week as I was missing my old one, feels good to be back!
It's an 840i LCI Convertible and the biggest surprise is how fast it feels on the road, especially considering the extra weight the folding roof adds. I'm curious what's going on with the power ratings, as they're listed as 245kw/ 333bhp (previously was 250kw/ 340bhp) but it definitely feels like more. Could they perhaps be fitting the more powerful version of the B58 from the M240i/ M340i etc and not telling anyone? I've seen similar reported on the GR Supra https://uk.motor1.com/news/357702/toyota-supra-dyn...
Either way dead happy with it, Merry Christmas all

It does look good… if I had a two car garage ( I do but I’m ignoring my wife’s mini as I don’t drive it tbh ) I’d like to think an 8 would sit in there as I certainly miss my dravit 8GC. I feel I will move back to BMW at some future point but probably to a M340i touring or similar as it ticks more practical boxes, unfortunately at time of 8 hand back there just weren’t any affordable leases out there for that model

Some 550i are on the trader around the £52k mark. Seems great value to me for a 500+bhp v8 saloon
Lovely rare beasts but they'll plummet further and further so not really a wise purchase long-term...?Edited by Funk on Friday 30th December 19:04
How do the 8 series compare to the 6 series in general? I really can't fault my 640d which does it's duties really well (outer London driving a few times a week but usually 300 miles of motorway every 6-8 weeks which hopefully keeps the DpF okay).
Not sure if I prefer the looks of the 8 or not, but it's certainly handsome and has presence.

ive just bought one ... for £52k and they do seem decent value.Edited by Funk on Friday 30th December 19:04
I was choosing between a 2019 m850 with 12k miles and a 7 year old panamera with 60k miles or a 10 year old 911 with 50k miles. All for similar money.
it is though an inherently middle aged and heavy car. and how soon will values fall off a cliff, i have no idea

I've driven both and they're quite similar cars in many ways. The main differences with the 8 are it's a bit sportier to drive, has a more luxurious interior and is slightly smaller in size. An 840d is a brilliant motorway cruiser if you're thinking to go diesel again. Not sure if I prefer the looks of the 8 or not, but it's certainly handsome and has presence.

Both models in the showroom, so it was the choice of a second hand ice blue 850, or new dravit 840 for me; the latter worked out the better deal, but kinda wished I'd plumped for the V8..
Snap same here! I do love my new 840i and did seriously consider a used M850i, but the AUC APR made it hard to justify,Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
