Awesome cars, although if you can stretch then I'd go for an M2 Competition over one.
I had a 140 but obviously the same under pinnings. As a road car they are great although they do need an LSD.
Pro nav, heated seats etc are a must. You can make stupid power (close to 500) with just a downpipe and a stage 2 map.
Standard brake pads are awful but brakes themselves are good once you fit uprated pads. Ditch the pilot supersports too if it comes on them, they are lethal in anything but dry conditions.
Extremely safe cars.I walked away from a very large crash with a sore wrist and some bruises.

Hell of a stretch mind you, given a low miles 2016 M240i like the O/P is looking at can be got for around £18K and an M2C starts at £38,000.

I’m also thinking of getting a LSD retrofitted to mine as I’ve heard the handling improves a lot especially when taking corners, it’s less twitchy.

Any opinions?
A few guys on BabyBMW have fitted them and rav about the difference they make.

Others say that a spring change and a swap to PS4’s make a pretty big difference to the handling.

Sticks.

Agree, although when I bought my 235i everyone was saying these were the best.

There are some around that price, depending on what you class as low miles. I paid 18.5k at the start of lockdown for a 39k miler, nothing else was comparable at the time, 20k plus was the minimum. From what I am told prices have since risen, although I am sure they will fall again when the country becomes unemployed.

You can get an M2 now for 25k.

He said M2 Competition though, not M2.

But on re-reading it, chances are he meant M2.

Possibly, yes.

There is always the option of a map if it is just power that you fancy. Notwithstanding the handling advantages of the M2, I am running more power than an M2C in my 240i and it is good enough for me. Makes it more of an engaging drive too as you really have to work to get the best out of it.

Would be a real rocket as they're no slouch standard!

We havent touched our M140i power wise, but there seems to be easy, significant power gains to be had.

I think we'll leave it now until the warranty expires then look into it further.

There is a whole world of debate over it, and whether handling mods first are more appropriate. Mine is totally stock, exhaust, internals, suspension. No LSD either. The power is controllable, so long as you are wise in your inputs and expectations. I have no doubt that the car may be disadvantaged around a set of twisties compared to something with a more bespoke setup, but this is where the driving needs to counteract it. A sensible dose of apexing where possible combined with slow in, fast out and throttle moderation shouldn't lose you much time.

It is comical on the straights though. 30mph onwards / 2nd gear onwards will see three figure speeds in only a handful of seconds.

Apart from LSD I’m thinking of getting catted downpipes for the meantime, any suggestions? Coupled up with a res delete should sound real nice. I have looked at full exhaust systems and I’ve got my eyes set on a Remus exhaust with carbon tips. Any recommendations?

I've recently bought a 66 plate M240i and I love it. I went Approved Used in the end as they check for it being abused etc so I thought it was worth the extra £££ for the piece of mind. They'd also fitted 2 new tyres (fronts) and replaced the brakes & serviced it - so I think I'm good for a little while.

Its my DD (although that's not that daily atm) but I really love it - looks lovely on the drive to look at too.

Would I have liked an M2? Yes, of course, but I couldn't stretch to the cost of one. Is this more than enough for what I probably want/need right now - yeah I think so.

I went Auto, ProNav, Cruise and CarPlay which is ideal and it also has a load of other extras which is nice. The Mineral White is lovely too.

Unfortunately mine was originally specced with the RunFlats (free upgrade in 2016 apparently) so that's what it currently has and I want to change them as they are somewhat noisy. Other downsides - the steering is light, I have to agree there. There isn't as much feedback as I'd like. I've driven the M135i in the past and my mates Cayman Gen1. The Cayman does handle better - no question, but like the OP, I couldn't balance the older car for the same cost equation as well s the risk/running costs.

Its not a purist as something like a Cayman but it's hands down (imo) nicer than the TTS (which I also looked at) and whilst I wasn't in the market for the practicality of back seats (we have an X5 for that) - I get the 'fun' as well as the bonus of the practicality. My 13yr old says its plenty big enough in the back.

If you haven't already pulled the trigger - if you find the right one - I'd not hesitate. It's lovely. Not perfect, but lovely.

Interesting, very similar to my experience. Have a M240i 18 plate on about 29k which I used to use as a DD doing about 70 miles a day on motorway, this replaced a 2.0 TT as I needed an automatic. It's well suited to a fast commute and quite relaxing on motorways or A roads, quiet and fast. Did try an M2 but it was too much of compromise for daily use, I have other cars for fun driving.

The wife did run a Cayman alongside it as her car, as a DD it was not a good experience, noisy and wearing but did have the edge on handling in the dry and on a recreational drive. In the wet it was another matter and it got written off when it spun into the Armco on the M4 in the recent rain. When it lets go it does it suddenly.

I regard it as a good GT type car, after years of hatch backs I find the profile of the M240i a more aesthetically pleasing shape than the M140i.
