330d F30 bottom end failure - bent conrods?
Discussion
The N57's do classically suffer with clatter between 1500 - 2000 under light to moderate load single turbo or twin turbo. Under heavy load the revs tend to bypass it so quickly or you get kickdown and the engine should sound far more pleasant (although there is the odd report of injector clatter if they have been cruising in town then you floor it).
Some find it when cold, semi warm or warm and brutally little that can be done (some remaps and fuels may reduce it). In relation to fuel the N57 was developed on BP fuels, you may find like some that ultimate or additives reduces it, some have reported yes, others no. I ran mine for ages on ultimate, but honestly the clatter is still there if you really listen hard enough.
Even my own 640D has some clatter when just below normal operating temperature at just about 2k under moderate load. In winter with longer warm up times I won't lie you tend to notice it more and once you know it is there trust me you will never be able to take your mind from it or put another way find reassurance that it is normal and can be ignored.
If you want proof of that put N57 clatter into Google and see the endless F30 threads about it. The higher series like the 5,6,7 still have it but to a lesser degree, but I know it is there now.
To me the car sounds fine and similar to other 30D engines I have driven which unlike the twin turbo variants seem to have clatter lower down (or maybe masked by the VVT), the twin turbos seem to have it a little higher at around 2k rpm as opposed to 1500 is rpm.
If you are concerned run the smooth running tests and rough running side of things should uncover potentially any issues.
The injectors themselves are frankly notorious though for being noisy and clatter buggers. Bmw reverted to solenoid injectors for the N47 and 57 unlike the M series. The B series is back on piezo injectors.
I would say like above though for me I know if mine has sat around a lot, done short journeys or is running crap fuel (or even winter diesel) as the clatter does tend to increase alongside the longer warm up times.
