We are told that regardless of Petrol or Diesel they are going to be replaced by electric cars. We see if that happen of are electric cars only a passing fad. IMHO scaling electric cars use will hit so many brick walls the idea will soon become a side issue.

Purchase the car on what you know now and leave all the dinosaur nonsense aside and in the scale of thing it's the old butter marg argument all over again.
I said dinasaur re diesels and as I said in my post I am not including Euro 6 it certainly is not nonsense re older models but thanks for reaching out but I am sticking to it.Do you not read or see whats going on around you ,or maybe you live in some backwater in a shed.

I saw the Euro 6, but not sure what difference it makes other than in some emission zones. Far better than allowing people to use wood burners or BBQs

The N20 is very different to the N43. The block doesn't have that big extrusion for the oil filter housing and the head is completely different - it has the inlet cam 'side mounted' like an N52. It was possibly machined on the same tools as the N43 but everything is different.

The N13 was a Peugeot unit bastardised by BMW and is a complete and utter piece of st.
Yeh I wasn’t sure- been a while since I worked on either tbh. As I said - I didn’t think much was shared, But I was meaning the n20 was much closer in design to the n43 I.e much more of a bmw design (not saying that’s a good thing) and the n13 was more like the n14 I.e more psa design (also not saying that’s a good thing)

I have driven both the 20d in the F30, and the 20i in the F36 (4GC). The diesel is very good, great economy and got enough pace when you put your foot down. Would recommend that engine and a good balance between performance and economy.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the 20i, but performed relatively well. I did find that you need to thrash it a little bit to get anywhere quickly, but perhaps thats because im used to diesel and the related torque.

The battery never runs out, the engine just recharges it when it gets to less than 5%.

As for buying a 330e, great car if you are a company car driver (I had several) but I would not fancy one out of warranty having seen the repairs some of my colleagues had during the first three years.

As for the OP’s question, having driven both they are very good cars but really need to be automatic for when you need the car to getting going quickly.

I currently have a 17 2.0 118d auto as a daily and it is a great car, it does everything very well, last month did several thousand miles across Europe in it and it was faultless.

That’s not right.

I can run mine with the petrol engine only.

How do you do it ?

What do you select to disengage the electric motor ?

And how does the car confirm the electric motor’s no longer operating ?

Is there a ‘Completely discharge the HV battery’ button ?

Genuinely interested, as I like the look of the i8

I have a ‘battery hold’ button and when the car is fully charged and this is selected, it runs on the petrol motor only, disengages the electric motor and doesn’t divert any power to charging it.

This is how it works in my 330e anyway, not sure about the i8.

Even when Save mode is selected the electric motor assistance is still there when accelerating, the mode just stops the car defaulting to EV in slower traffic or allows you to recharge the battery with the use of the ICE.

I'd look to get a 330i or 330d they won't be that much more and I think I'd rather go for an older less well spec'd version of either of those myself to bring the price differential closer.
