Wondered if any owners of either out there please (looking at the newer generation 5.0D). Wondered what the ownership experience is like, MPG’s and the like?

Not clear if it is the current generation you are looking at, or the previous one?

I had the F15 previous generation as M50D, coming out of an F10 M5.

The M50D I found severely lacking, and had it remapped a few months into ownership. Fuel economy was as bad as the F10 M5 on fast motorway journeys (Germany), and the rise was too harsh on 20” run flat tyres (even with the Professional adaptive suspension).

An X5M would likely be a good deal worse on fuel but at least it would be fast.

If it is the current generation, the nominal improvements to the M50D are not huge, but maybe the 4 turbo setup works better in real life.

I would be inclined to look for a 40D, the M50D in my opinion is neither sporty nor sufficiently different to a 40D, whereas at least the X5M is full on nutter

Sorry, yea current generation. Suspect a 4.0D with a remap would be the sweet spot of the lot - power and economy

Had a New M50d on loan for a few days when my F90 M5 was getting some recall work done. Hugely disappointing car. Felt not particularly quick and nothing like a full fat M car and a rolly old boat. I owned the previous generation F15 M50d from new thinking it would give me 90% of the full M experience, which was a big mistake. Quickly traded in for a X5M was was a totally different car. I.e. don’t expect the M50d to be a cut price M experience (also found the engine much noisier then the other 6 cylinder diesel models).
Either go full fat X5M or stick with a 40d as any more power is wasted without the specialist M suspension/chassis imo.
Re mpg, over the 5 days I had it, the new M50d averaged 25.3 mpg in mixed driving. My former X5M did 15.8mpg on V power over the 30k I owned it.

The current M50d has now been discontinued think if your wanting new you can only get the X5 m50i.
