Thanks for all the positivity. Messing with the car is good distraction from all the downers going on in the world right now. Tested map 1 on the JB4, looks like it takes roughly second off the 100-200 nanometers per hour time. Down from 8.3 (cold weather) to 7.4 (hot weather) with the extra boost pressure. I like this list for perspective: https://autotopnl100-200.com/100-200/

The car is looking fantastic in that colour, under the radar as well without all the proper M kit adorned. Quite a good price-point as well for what is practically an M5. Hats off to you, hope you enjoy it as much as possible.

Really enjoying this thread. I have an 840 GC and my dad has a 540i x drive so we are enjoying this insight.

What have you done to the exhaust?

I have used a BMC filter before on an S5 and got more whooshes and noise. Also used a JB1 on a Golf R and definitely preferred it to a tuning box. With the JB4 being the next evolution I am sure it will be excellent.

I actually think the 550i is the pick of the BMW range in total. An 850 is silly expensive and an M5 comp rides too hard and sounds pants in comparison to the 550i. Go via Broadspeed and a standard 550i is sub £60k.

I believe this colour is Phytonic Blue.

Be great to see some videos on Youtube and hear some sounds!

So I was clearing out the garage of old baby stuff this weekend when I came across the last of a can of this stuff: https://boostane.com/

I used to use it on the high boost map in my S4. Put the last 100ML in with half a tank to make it 102-103 RON fuel mix.

Using JB4 map one in cooler air with the extra octane made her absolutely fly! 6.9-7.0 secs 100-200 consistently. I would like to take this car to the drag strip once things open up to see what she can really do.

What did you have done on the exhaust mate?

Had an X pipe made from the Cats back to the OEM rear muffler in order to retain the valves.

Happy with the resulting noise?

It's about 20% louder with the X pipe when the valves are open and 10% closed. This is how it sounds in sport mode. Smoother in tone as both banks are balanced better. I think it's more 'Italian' V8 than 'American' now if you know what I mean?

Picked mine up today. I had quite a lot of errands to do so not a huge number of miles racked up but first impressions very good. It has a nice kind of Jekyll and Hyde vibe to it as in comfort mode it's very toned down where in sport it's much louder and more exciting.

Despite the OPF it's still loud enough that you can hear the actual noise with the windows down which is a big improvement over the M140i which was too quiet. Interesting to see the options that are available to release a little more voice in due course though.

Look forward to some pictures. What colour paint and leather did you go for?

Welcome to team 550! That's a colour that looks different in each sort of light, would be great to see more angles.

Thanks! Yes, it really changes depending on the light - almost like a kind of pastel grey in dull conditions to really being able to see the amber effect metallic when the sun hits it.

I'll try and get some better shots of it out and about once I've had chance to go on a proper run, always better to see a car in a scenic location than a car park.

Car park chic...

Bit disappointed with one aspect of this car however, the 0-60 / 0-62 (100kph) isn't quite what I expected.

The Book says 3.8 to 100kph or 3.6 to 60mph. BMWs 4WD turbos typically crush those figures.

This was the best I managed in optimum conditions:

So of course I sought validation in order to discover if my vehicle was an outlier of some sort. Turns out this is a global observation with the LCI model...

Wow it needs a JB4 map to get close to the booked figures, one guy can't get his standard car below 4.6 to 62, big thread on bimmerpost about it, I guess it's a LC issue rather than a power output issue, so not relevant to normal driving.

My X3MC never really felt like a 4 second car to 62 from a launch but did feel very strong once rolling and lets face it who constantly launches their car you'd be a bit of a tool to be doing that on public roads all the time.

As much as I like these, if you're going to start modifying one and chasing launch times, do you not reach the point where you'd have been better off just getting the M5? It's not like there's that much of a price difference given the deeper discounting on the latter.

The price difference is big - 550i can be had for £59k new
