I don't have experience with the E63 650i but I did have the engine in a E53 X5 4.8iS. It is a lovely and smooth engine(apart from the oil leaks) and they make a great noise I reckon. smokin

I'd recommend one for the noise alone. thumbup

My X5 was terrible on fuel though(not helped because of the 4wd/shape and the 2200kg weight), however I've read that the 650i is actually very frugal in comparison.
My E64 is of course heavier than the E63 and seems to get about 22/23 round town and high 20's on a run. Have seen as high as 32, but that required a fair bit of hypermiling!
That is brilliant for a V8 I reckon. thumbup

My X5 only used to give me about 12mpg on my 44 mile a day commute at the time, 20mpg would be it's absolute best. I loved it to bits though and I'm glad I had it, but I do look back and laugh now at how poor it was on fuel though.
26mpg from this at 65-70mph.

Goes fairly well though.

Look for a thread I started. I hunted down a good 630 last year. Someone was kind enough to post the options and features available on the car from the brochure.

I love my 630. Feel happy every time I get in it and although she’s old I stare at it after I’ve parked it. I missed all the fancy options of some of the newer cars I had leased but I soon got over that.]

I’ve done 10k miles and average about 32mpg on my commute, cruise, just under 70mph. Goes down to low 20s when I hit the 7000rpm.

I do love your fleet of cars big time. smokin

26mpg is well decent for sure. thumbup

I remember once sitting at 50mph for miles and miles trying to get the mpg up as high as I could...and I still got nowhere near 26mpg! hehe

I'd still love another V8 X5 even now though, but I wouldn't daily it like I did when I had mine though. I have really fond memories of mine(fuel consumption aside).

Not bad mpg, but then I'm used to 14mpg round town and low 20s on a run.

I really do love my E63. Even taking the V10 and SMG box out of the equation, the 6 series is a lovely thing and having just figured out in can burn MP3 to a DVD disc, even the old tech isn't that much of a problem!

I would personally not bother with a 335i if coming from a M140i, its more of the same and whilst the N54 and N55 are brilliant, they don't have the free revving nature, response or sound of the naturally aspirated engines.

I’m starting to come round to that way of thinking too; I don’t want an N54 sue to bork factor and N55 (whilst sounding better than my car) is probably very similar. They’re quite expensive too.

Ultimately I think it’s the enjoyment of the N52 in my other half’s car that has made me look at things a bit differently.

Thanks Lee. thumbup

From what I've read, the V8 was rather raucous in the E53. Seems a lot more civilised in the E70 but does sound pretty serious when you give it some grief. My wife mainly uses it for child care run around duties (or for work). Suffice to say, fuel economy is poor around town.

Yeah, they're brilliant things. Talking about the N52 being the safe option, now you've brought the V10 along, can we agree that the N62 is a safe-ish option wink

Seriously though, I adore the M6 if our era and would love one. I don't look at the newer model M cars in the same light at all (sorry to any F model owners). They went faster but also went waftier. The V10 Lunacy is so appealing and we'll never see it again!

Cheers, yeah the V10 is lunacy, but it won't be long before the idea of a V8 will be too. The N62 does sound great and I bet the 645i and 650i make brilliant cruisers.

A good M6 with the major work done shouldn't actually be any more a problem than a good 650i.... I know of a fair few high mileage V10s, including an M5 touring on about 200k miles and plenty a good way north of 100k that are still being enjoyed regularly.

It's when you buy one and none of the known issues have been addressed that it gets silly. It either costs a lot in those jobs, or a lot more if you chose not to do them.

It's never going to be cheap, but it also isn't going to depreciate much either. I spent a lot more running a 335i than the M6 if depreciation is factored in!

Hi All,

E63 650, what a wonderful machine.

A couple of pictures of my Nov 2005 650.

These pictures were taken in Dec 2019.

No squeeks or rattles and car felt like it had all of it's 360 horses. Still drove beautifully.

I bought it in 2011 on 48kmiles for 15k. I sold it Dec 2019 on 201k for 3k.

Very highly spec'd; logic 7, HUD, Exclusive leather, Dynamic drive, pro sat nav, CD changer, upgraded speakers, etc, etc.

Outside of normal consumables from memory at my superb BMW indie, over 9 years, I had to have 1 wheel bearing, 2 rear brake pipes - 240, valve stem seals & cam cover seals @ 160k miles 1500, gearbox sump cover 200, suspension bushes, various - 300, oil level sensor 160.

Rear spring about 150

Over 150k miles, it never let me down.

I did service it every 12k miles and it never needed oil between services, worst case was it went from 5 bars to 4 bars between services.

Next.......Economy.

Most of my commuting is on motorways at 80 with a final 8 miles of very fast superb empty roads.
This was being on best behaviour, after potential speeding error of judgement, but shows what is possible, 29.7 mpg over 3600 miles making safe progress.

Now the really important points.
The longer I had the car, the more I loved it.
Car is ageing disgracefully well.
Absolute confidence in the car, never let me down.
Epic for the weekly 550 mile round trip to my customer, supremely comfortable and quite.
Felt special every time I drove it.
Loads of positive comments.
Sounded fantastic. Always sounded great when driving. However, when I was driving my wife's car and she passed me in the 650 with her foot to the floor, it sounded epic.
Every time I parked, I looked back at the car.
The 650 is an epic car, absolutely loved it and would have another in a heartbeat.

And in the interests of balance the negatives;
a bit of corrosion on the drivers side mirror mount.

Thanks for everyone’s help.

The 140i should be going on Friday but I’ve bought something a wee bit smaller than a 6; I’ve ended up with a 130i Limited Edition. Happy with the deal I’ve got both ways and the car has recently had Birds B1 suspension fitted.

Boooo!

We'll see you back at this thread in 6 months once you've decided that the 130 is too similar to the 140 and you really do want something different smile

Jokes aside, we all the know the 130 is a very decent car. Hope it serves you well.
