My friendly local stealer called yesterday and the conversation went like this;

Stealer "Your order for the X3 3.0d will be in production soon"

me "so what'll it cost me to change"

Stealer "with 20k miles on your June 04 3.0 SE costing £42k now books at £23.5"

me "F*** ME and you expect me to buy another one huh?"

Stealer "as a valued customer I'm sure that there's something we can do to ..............."

me "yeah sure thanks, bye for now"

Why oh why oh why didn't I buy an X5 :silly:

Jees that is bad. I thought £10.5K off a Mercedes C Class Diesel was bad, but circa £20K on a car of that value in just over 12 months is shocking.

I would ask another dealer there opinion that doesn't sound right to me.

Actually - and I'm not having a dig here - I'm genuinely interested to know why you went for an X3 over an X5 given the proximity of their list prices and the generally bad press recieved in contrast to the X5's many plaudits?

At a guess it could be that your X3 had a lot of extras like my Mercedes. If it is anything like my car, the depreciated value when compared to a standard car wasn't too bad. However when the car was loaded up with toys, those same toys made the car saleable, but they did very little to the trade value.

£42K on an X3. Jeepers. Might as well keep it for another 10 years to get your money's worth.

Test drove an X5 4.4 on launch and it was a great drive, but it's huge and very very thirsty etc. due to weight/size/drag. X3 drives better IMHO, is quicker (3.0 petrol's compared), larger inside, larger boot and more economical. There's also the X5 waiting lists & US manufacturing facility (quality?).

I think the press kudos(and Clarkson's Onion comments are probably what's killed the cars 2nd hand value. I've taken an Army off road instructor off road in it and he was very impressed - he bought one too!

Still, we live and learn. Keeping it is definitely an option and I guess another supercharger project is always possible.

Yikes... I looked at one but got scared off on a few counts;

1. Everything was extra, well not everything but loads of stuff I wanted.
2. Dealer instantly said I could get the colour coded bumpers and not unclude it in part of negotiations. Made me worried when sooooo keen to offer extras with no negotiating.
3. Dash is horrible.

So ended up with a Lexus RX300SE instead....and after reading the depreciation on the X3 it makes it sound like I did the right thing. Not saying the depreciation will be good on the Lexus but at least the only extras I paid for were parking sensors and metallic paint...so residuals based almost on what I paid and not on a car £5 - 10k less. (hope that makes sense)...

I would say you where wrongly advised when you brought it!!

The X3 is a good car but not a 42K car!

Your dealer should of stopped you getting carried away with the option list.

just thought I would give you another angle to blame us dealers from for spending your money

Thanks for that comedy moment Donut, but it's the fact the same dealer expects me to do it a second time that makes me smile. With 1st hand experience, I can confirm, it's not a £42k car. I'll get a 3.0d next year for about £25k perhaps. Want to do me a deal?

I think that the 3.0d will hold it's value much better, but I'll do you a deal

I'm in the same situation, ex-demo Jun '04 X3 3.0i Sport, virtually every conceivable options 19's, Satnav, Bodykit, exhaust etc paid £41k for it, asked how much and they offered £26k!!!!!

The reason they gave was that infamous BMW X3 £299pm offer of last year, it's basically devalued the entire range! Barstewards!!!!!!

And on top of the monster depreciation, there's the shame of having to drive an X3 as well. You have my sympathy !

Stu, I agree there's far too many making comments without driving the X3! As a 996 driver I find the X3 fun to drive and a great car.

I'm sure it drives much better than the Saab.

I just think the X3 looks , and also don't really get the whole 4x4 thing anyway. Still, each to their own, I'm glad you like yours.
