Hi folks me again.
Got a 525i se auto e34. does it have a timing belt or a chain cos the guy I bought it from said it was a chain which to me is unusual , but then again it's my first bmw.If it is a chain when does it need replaceing if at all? He said he had put a new tensioner on it but I felt the guy was a bit dodgy, please enlighten me
cheers Mark

To the best of my knowledge it is a timing chain - but something that important may be worth a phone call to you local BMW dealer? I know the 4 cylinder car post m40 (93ish) engines were chained not belted... Hope thats of use... but not sure about the sixes

yeh it shoul be a chain and you need the chain pre tension (basicaly tightend up) as the metal chain gradualy wares out,
