Saw a new 3 series today and I thought it looked a little bland compared with the outgoing car.

I genuinely like the styling of the 5&7 series, I'd give the 6 series 6/10 for looks.

Just going on looks what do BMW enthusiasts think of the new 3 series? I liked the old model's styling a lot. It could look quite elegant in some colours and quite aggresive in others.

Do you love or loathe the looks? I think they could have made more of the opportunity and not cast aside some of the better and in my opinion more sucessful styling cues of the old model...

Until now, I've always been bowled over by the latest 3 series, in the sense of - I must have one of them - the current 3 series is the first time I've really preferred the outgoing version - I've owned an E30 325i, E36 M3 Evo, and E46 330Ci Sport.

I'm waiting to see what the coupe looks like, but I'm very disappointed with the current 3 series styling - looks OK with huge wheels, but IMHO the styling is heavy handed and lacks the finesse of previous versions. The wheel arches and wheels just seem too small compared to the profile of the car. I also think the front looks like most other saloons. However, I am getting older now, so not sure how much of my opinion, is based on my good 'ol days rose tinted specs!

I'm OK with this though as I feel much more justified in spending some cash modifying my current car rather than spending a significant amount of money to buy the latest model. The current 3 series may be the best car in its class, but BMW must be alienating a large proportion of their customer base with their current styling - good design isn't something you should have to get use to - the E39 and E46 looked great from the day they were released, and they still look great now.

Bit off thread, but what are you going to do to it, out of interest?

Been thinking about it for a (long) while now - just waiting to spring into action - SK Plus supercharger, Stoptech BBK and 19" AC Schnitzer type 3 racing alloys.

I love BMW's, but every time a new model comes out i despise it at first... then it grows on me... then I want one... Strange but true.
For example, when the E46 came out i disliked it, thought the E36 was a better looking (And less 'soulless') car - REALLY didn't like the E46 M3, but now few years on i like them. Moral of the tale? Maybe the New 3 is like a good wine - it'll get better with age... :-)

...just my thoughts on the topic

(Still not sure about the 1-series though, but i'll reserve judgement)

I think they look cack now especially the 1 & 3 series. I used to have an E36 coupe and it looked great.
When you get out your car walk away and then turn back for that one last glance at your pride and joy, it's a good feeling with a decent motor. But I honestly can't imagine doing that with a 1 or 3 series. I'd probably run off, or park around a corner out of embarissment.

Huge step back, IMO. Meanwhile, the new Lexus IS is looking mighty attractive by comparison.

i dont like any of the new BMW's, think they are terrible looking cars. The current M3, M3 CSL and X5 apart, the rest are seriously badly styled cars. I don t think i will be going back for another M3 or another BMW.

I have many friends who think exactly the same. BMW are only going to lose customers with cars looking like this. Lexus, Merc etc must be rubbing their hands.

Who cares what they look like ?

I don't. The ownership numbers add up, and that is what counts for me.

I think the major negative point on the new cars is the I-drive system. I haven't driven it yet, but all the comment I've seen is negative.

I ended getting the new A4 Avant with S line body kit, which looks fantastic IMHO. I know the BM will handle better but couldn't live with those looks!

The 3-series mings. I like the new BMWs a lot - the Z4 is an amazing piece of work, the 5 and 6 have livened up a couple of dull and staid market segments a treat. Hell, I even like the much maligned 7 series, and think the 1 is the best looking hatchback on the market today, but the 3 is muck.

1 series good looking? - It's an ugly cross between Alfa and an Astra - New 3 series is cack also. 5 is growing slowing on me, but only if in black, as it hides all the sticky-out bits (just like fat chicks in black trousers)

The 3 is superbly dull, bland and boring. I'd rather they were controversial with it and provoke some reaction but I can't be bothered with it tbh.

Was that a serious question ? Who cares what a car looks like ?

Do you really need an answer to that ?

I think Jeremy Clarkson was right on Top Gear. It's just a lump of 'car'.
So bland and soul-less. Completely lacking in any design flair.
Rear end looks straight off a Mitsubishi Galant.
Front end looks like it's trying to hide it's face in shame.

I am actually organising a "FATWA" against CHRIS BANGLE :free pizzas on me for anyone who shoots the bugger , or better still , for anyone who forces him to wear a thicker set of glasses and put him through chemotherapy to rid him of all bad taste in designing "vehiiiicles" as them yanks call them.
3 , 5 , 6, and 7 series suck big time sorry to say.
i say sack the barsteward and go back to your roots BMW !!!

The 5 series grew on me, the 7 is different but not elegant, the 3 looks okay with the right wheels, but is pretty dull. No doubt when they start selling the sport kit it will look and sell a whole lot better (like the 5). The 6 is still too Cetacean for me though.
