Check it out on BM3W and see if it's been in the 'roll calls', then check if the poster has contributed to track days.

Or you could ask the previous owner (notice it's on a trade site). Don't think there's a mojor problem with a CSL that's been on track though is there?

IBROKER,
Have you driven an SMG gearbox car yet? I sold my M3 (not CSL) because I hated it. Fantastic if you are on track or driving the sock's of the car but cr-p around town in trafic at slow speeds. I will buy another but it will be 6 speed manual.

Yes I have driven a M3 with the SMG box. I am told the one in the CSL is better than the standard M3

the software is different to the older E46 SMG II, but updates are possible on both.

For me the CSL suits the SMG very well and it works great on the track, and with some time, the road too.

Having owned manual M3, SMG M3 and CSL M3, I can say that The CSL SMG is a little better than the normal M3's, but that I can't really work out why you would think SMG any worse around town than the manual. It's the same gearbox. If you learn the lift slightly while you change technique, it is perfectly smooth around town.

The either or option, I have to say, is quite appealing to me. I did not find the standard SMG M3 I have driven unduly smooth

Zod,
Maybe I had a bad one ? The main problem I had was when slowing down to almost stop in second gear. For example at a roundabout if the car was not completly stationary and I pulled away it could not decide what gear to be in!! Sometimes it stayed in second and the next time it would change down to first. The same problem in traffic. At slow speeds the gear changes were anything but smooth even lifting as you suggest. In fully automatic mode the gearchange was as bad as an old borg warner box! The main dealer I bought my car from admitted to me that a lot of people find the SMG system difficult to get on with. I was told 'you will get used to it' I have had four M3 cars starting with an E30, but give me a manual box any day

Just change manually to 1st so you don't give it the chance to decide between 2nd and 1st. It'll only chnage down in manual mode if you reach the stalling point.

VSP90, the auto mode is so bad that for me it doesn't exist. As for the changedown issue, that's better in the CSL and in updated M3s, but you just get into the habit of changing manually down to 1st as Nathan says.

SMG on the CSL is fantastic - wouldn't go back to a manual at all. Sounds like you had a faulty one (or hadn't been upgraded)
