After buying my 1998 525 TDS Se Tourer 18 months ago, mainly because of the engine's reputation for doing big miles ... I now appear to have on of the few 525Ds in the country that hasn't made 200k :(

It has 166k on it, is a superb car, does 170 motorway miles a day, but has now got a cracked cylinder head.

It is with Blue Bell in Altrincham (Manchester) and their preferred route is a recon head, fully guaranteed from BMW in Germany. This will cost about £1500 including labour.

a) Does anyone know where I can get a second hand / recon cylinder head from at a better price please?

b) Will a second hand one match to the bottom half of the engine ok?

c) Is it better/more cost effective to try and find a whole engine with less miles and swap the lot?

Any help greatly appreciated as at the moment I am quite some distance up s*** Creek!

Have Google for UK specialists, I know of one around here, will look up the number and mail you.

Yes, as long as they haven't made any major changes at any stage in the engine's production run.

Only if you get it at a really good price or it comes with a guarantee.

Will be worth getting the deck of the block checked for flatness.

Where exactly has it cracked. It may well be possible to get it welded and machined which should be a lot less than £1500. depends where the crack is.

Good luck,

Hi Mick,

welding not an option as it has gone into one of the water channels also. Blue Bell considered it but said it wouldn't last long if possible to do.
