Lightweight Mini pics leak

BMW slips sketches onto the Web

BMW has let slip onto the Web some sketches of what the forthcoming, lightweight Mini will look like.

It's been released accidentally under the name John Cooper Works GP Tuning Kit. Apparently, the sketches are part of a press kit yet to be released.

More on the Mini2 forum (link below).

Why the '02' plate if it's going to be a "future" release car?

I think it's meant to be a private plate "S Works" Obviously not a very effective one though

Doesn't matter what they do to "it", S-works stuff, stick on bits, woody kits or detachable picnic tables, it still isn't a Mini.

What's the point in releasing pics of it? It looks identical to any other Mini apart from the wheels and one or two small changes. They shoudl have released more info on the technical changes.

So it's going to be lighter and therefore quicker, but will the interior still look like the inside of a girlies bedroom?

Well yes probably, but that's always better than the depressing onlaught of cheap, hard black and grey plastics in other small cars...

That, and girlies bedrooms can actually be rather nice places to be in...

If this is the rumoured lightweight "CSL" version then it was meant to be a stack lighter from perspec windows and no rear seats, plus see 240bhp from a tweak to the S Works kit. A carbon fibre bonnet clamshell was also mooted.

Well the pics leaked by BMW accidentally and on the Mini2 site now show drawings with no rear seats and state a weight saving of 40Kg (which will be coming from more than a bit of foam). It also states about 215bhp, not the 240bhp I said earlier.

If I get bored today I'll take the seats out of the back of my Cooper S and weigh them. I'd be delighted if I could achieve a DIY GP Tuning Kit, albeit underpowered, with nothing more than a spanner and 5 mins.

You have to love marketing people, don't you?
