I am looking at buying a Z4. I have a simple question, is the Z4M worth the extra cash? I love the look of the new coupe, but still want the 'fresh air' option. Any thoughts?

I will be driving a Z4M at the end of this week, so I will let you know. I will be comparing it to my Alpina Roadster plus a few key competitors. I suspect it will feel quite different to drive than the regular Z4, particularly steering response and chassis compliance, but I will soon find out.

We collect it from BMW in Munich at the end of the week, then we have two days of driving to establish a viewpoint. If BMW have either sold the //M brand short or not differentiated the Z4M from regular Z4s then we will soon find out.

I have just ordered a Z4M, and like all the people on the lengthening waiting list, ordered it without even a test drive. I had also considerd the Boxter S, TVR Tuscan and Z43.). The Boxter S has excellent handling in a very civilised way but not quite enough grunt for me. The TVR worried me for its total lack of ABS etc and didn't meet my requirement of a true soft top....the convertable is not a soft top, it still has a lift out panel. So that leaves the Z4 3.0 or Z4M. I don't know what the new valvetronic II 3.0 engine is like but on paper its looks good at 265bhp. However, taking a M3 coupe for a test drive did it for me, that engine is wonderful. The difference in price to a 3.0 is £7K when you go for matching level of trim. Several of the more professional journalists who have test driven the Z4M report that you have to learn to drive the Z4M through the under steer and get the back end going at which point the car totally beats the much more refined Boxter S on handling. Quote "handles like we all hope a TVR should handle but rearely does. just be aware that the M engine needs 4 start petrol and mpg is poor compared to the 3.0. But if I was interested in mpg, I would still be on my bicycle.
Damn this male menopause.
Bless you

I looked athe Z4M yesterday.
To be honest I would rather go for the new 3.0 version.
It's only 0.7 secs slower 0-60 and does the same speed. Of course the M will have more pull midrange and has better brakes but still an £8K+ difference between the two models!

It's worth it. And bear in mind the difference is less than £8k since the Z4M comes with many more standard items that are options on the 3.0si.

I was speccing a Z4 Sport Coupe today. This has as standard the M seats and suspension and with a few extras total cost is c£33.5k. Must say I find it hard to justify another £8k to get the Z4M Coupe.
My only mental block is that I feel if I am getting a 2 seater I should have the ability to take the roof off, however I have to say the Coupe is IMHO a better looking car than the roadster.

don't forget only the M has the proper hydraulic steering! The rest are all electric and thus numb.

Better resolved suspension with a deeper range of talents, the engine which has so many more layers of character and performance, it's much quicker and the steering is more fluid than the EPS one in the regular Z4. That's not to say everyone should buy the Z4M but it's not just a Z4 with a little extra trimming, in the same way that an M3 isn't just a 330Ci with a few frills. It depends on what you want.
