I'm not quite sure how this works as I thought the car kept the phonebooks different for each paired phone
You might be right on that one. I will check.
I have just checked and can confirm that the address book does relate to each paired phone. So my efforts yesterday will help if I change the SIM from my Blackberry to my mobile. This keeps the same mobile number but is hardly something I will want to do before each journey. I've got my helpdesk at work taking this up with the BlackBerry people to see if there is a way forward.
Sorry for the bad advice yesterday. I'll out it down to lack of a thorough test plan. The address book appeared but it was because my mobile was the active device at the time!

I have a formal response from Blackberry.
To integrate the Address Book on a Blackberry requires v4.1 or later of the handset software. There is only one model, the 8700v which has this software. There are no plans to release a version of 4.1 software on my model, the 7100v.
I have a list of BMW models thatsupport integration from specified production dates. It also appears that you require BMW Assist whichever model you have. The earliest date is September 05. Earlier models may require reprogramming.
Looks like I need an upgrade!
Edit: I'm getting a free upgrade. New unit being delivered on Monday so it looks like this will have a happy ending.

I now have my new 8700 unit and can confirm that it integrates fully with my car without the need for a cradle.

My Pearl works beautifully in my 520d (from Sept06), as mentioned above you need at least v4.1 software on the BlackBerry. I'm pretty sure you don't need BMW assist though, I certainly haven't.
Here's the article on BlackBerry's website www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB04714&sliceId=SAL_Public&dialogID=8852683&stateId=0
Note that the article mentions BMW Assist, which I think is wrong...

For interest,
I've got an HTC Meteor (spv C700) and it fully synced with my 2005 X5 yesterday when I collected it.
Problem is though, that I have over 400 phone numbers in my phone (synced with outlook on my PC) and its impossible to scroll through them all on the wheel and just as tricky on the navi screen.
Is there a way to only add in the 20 numbers or so, that I use regularly in the car??

Blackberry phones will NOT work on any bmw and yes there are more phones compatable with bmws there not listed on there web site but you might not get full working functions! i.e phone book might not download on satnav!
Strange. My Crackberry works perfectly well on my Z4. Both the phone and address book functions.

Wrong, my BB 8700 works perfectly on my 2006 Z4M Coupe.
