The cars/engines affected were:

E34 530i (V8)
E34 540i
E39 520i
E39 523i
E39 528i

All cars built from Week 10 (March 1998) had a new block and were not affected by Nikasil

a 97P is bang in the effected range

Is that the definitive list? No E36 328's on there.....is that right?

Nope, list is just for 5 Series

3's and 7's built around the same times, one would assume they to are effected

Steering wheels on these are tricky and you will need to check part numbers with BMW.

I have been told that s/wheels from later cars won't fit correctly due to changes in airbag technology and design. The changes occured in 98 and 2000/01 from memory.

In respect of the latest clear rear lights you have to install a couple of additional electrical boxes supplied with the lights. Most people normally secure them in the bottom of the spare wheel well.

www.bmwland.co.uk has lots of advice on both these topics.

Good luck with the purchase.

Yours has a smaller wheel on it hasn't it Nigel? I seem to remember it being an ?mtec option without buttons and with a smaller diameter....

Can't find the number, as the changer is screwed in, but this is what it looks like if you need a comparison.

I recently bought a Sony Multi CD Unit with interface from Halfwits. The connection was easy & I liked the fact that I could tell it which plane the unit sits in. (Previous posts on here told me that the BMW units failed as they didn't like being mounted vertically)

Hi Mike,

It is an mtec without buttons but if its smaller than normal then normal must be like driving a Routemaster bus - it feels huge

I did some time ago look into retro installing cruise and replacing wheel with a multifunction one - it was then I discovered all the different part numbers / wheels for different age E39's .... and came to the conclusion it would be cheaper to change the car !
