The other thing that needs to be reinforced and remembered is ... that despite the immediate and misleading impression given by his collection that such low mileage, superb 8-Series are commonplace (because he's got three ultra low mileage cars)...they are not!

Those cars represent a greater proportion of some of the best and lowest mileage E31's extant!

Trust me...I'm a doctor too!

Sorry, it took me a second or two to realise - 4 840ci's!!! all low miles.... great car if you are into that type of thing, but 4 of them? Touch odd if you ask me...

Mind you, one way of keeping the mileage down I suppose... and yes, they are rather smart

Always admired the looks but, I've heard they're heavy, underpowered and cost a bomb to run

Yes, they're heavy (more than an equivalent E38 7-Series in fact)...but that's part of the inherent build quality.

Underpowered (circa just under 300 bhp)is a relative concept...believe me that driving one of these things at full tilt is a very 'involving' experience (I've owned several). Take charge of a car of this kind of bulk, at speed, and you'll be very, very 'focused'

Amongst my collection of cars I have an E30 M3 which I've owned for over 5 years...I can assure you that, on the public road, at speed, an 8-Series is every bit as 'exciting'...if not frightening!!! The E30 M3 is very good... almost too good, too easy, too forgiving...The E31 feels like if you make a mistake it's going to end in the most calamitous disaster!

The reality of running one should not be materially more than say an equivalent engined E38 or E39...except when one gets into body or trim parts.

I haven't put my latest 840Ci Sport on my website but the two of the others I've owned (since sold) are still on it:

www.bmwclassics.co.uk/about/index.html#forsale

The texts on these two cars also give my thoughts as to why these cars were initially misunderstood and maligned by much of the mainstream motoring press when first launched. I think it is only recently (last year or two) that some people have begun to wake up to what these cars might represent i.e a big, expensive, stylish, stand-out GT car in the tradition of big BMW Coupes of the past...and many people might be thinking at the moment: "Has it's successor, the latest 6-Series really matched it in those stakes?" Probably the majority would say the current 6-Series hasn't managed this?

No other production BMW looks like an E31 and it's probably unlikely anything ever will do again?

We shifted an Estoril blue 840Ci a couple of weeks ago - I'll see if there's any pictures lying around...

The dakar yellow is my favourite - all look sensational.

Thanks Mike!
I haven't yet done a page for my 840Ci Sport (again in Silver over Black Leather like the previous two on my website) but here are a few snaps if anyone wants a look. Sorry for the tedious way I've had to display these so far...haven't got round to stringing a slide-show together yet...well, I mean I haven't got round to getting my wife to do it for me 'cos I don't know how to!

Paddy...actually there is (and has been for over a year) an ex-Sultan of Brunei 1992 Alpina version for sale with a VANISHINGLY low mileage of 1900 miles on the clock!

The asking price is £55K! Granted a lot of money...But if one then thinks this car cost circa £110K when new in 1992, still has essentially brand new mileage, massive performance plus with that provenance the price starts to appear may be not so 'outlandish'?

Trouble is...I don't have £55K lying around

Thanks again Mike! My problem is now that I've have got it in this condition I'm faced with the dilemna of really wanting to drive it but being too scared too! The car only has a genuine 24K miles on the clock! Despite this I had the whole car resprayed (too many small scratches, stone-chips etc). After this was initially done I was completely happy with the final result and ended up paying to have it done again! I did all the other 'detailing' myself.

i take it this isn't derin100 selling these ebay cars? (being a surgeon, you wouldn't be 'Dr' Owen i take it)

how many other medicos are there out there obsessively detailing older BMWs and selling them? we must know!

Nope...not me. I'm a 'Mr'and I only have the one Arctic Silver 840Ci Sport...it's the 24K miles on the clock one which isn't actually on my website but is the one in the photos in the links pasted above.

I have and do correspond with the Dr selling those 8's.He's a pathologist...one of the clever doctors that looks at and makes sense of the bits of meat that I've chopped out and send to them in buckets of formalin! 'Mr's like me cut things...like barbers...it's an historical title from the days when barbers really did double-up as surgeons. Strange but true...

We've never met face to face and I've never seen any of his cars but you only have to look at the collection, mileages descriptions etc to know that the two he's put up for sale on PH must represent very, very good cars at extremely favourable prices! I would suggest even without ever having seen them that anyone seriously thinking about buying an 8 should give very serious consideration to any of his cars. (I have no vested interest in offering that opinion).

My Elan was owned by a Consultant Surgeon (Mr Zenon Rayter...cant be to many of those around!...sadly not quite as obsessive in his detaiing as you! but in the 14yrs he owned it (he had it from new) every invoice for every last penny spent was with the car, from order, deposit, purchase invoice and all maintenace which gave the car beautiful provinence in a jungle of 8 owner cars with no history!

A surgeon comparing himself to a barber yikes Seriously Derin, that's one heck of a modesty streak coming out there......

Mind you, I used to play rugby with a couple of orthopaedic surgeon nutters, strangely they were very good at machining and putting together bits of cars as well.

Yeah but who cares! They look cloud9 and I always have a good look at one when I see them parked.
