I did !!!! And i've been meaning to post a comment on your message board for a while. May i just say congratulations on your attention to detial and througherness reguarding these cars. Its quite obvious that you don't just go out looking for a clean one...it has to be the right one. I myself, do try to keep my little M3 in the cleanest possable manner (see some pictures on my profile) and for a car that has been used, lives on the street and is a daily driver i'd like to think that i do a fairly good job. BUT nowhere near as good as you my friend. I'll have to bring the car round and you can give me some REAL lessions in car cleaning.

One last thing before i go, really liking the e28 Alpina lurking in the background. The e28 shape (M5 or M535i)is my absolute favourite model in the BMW range.

Thanks John!

That M3 of yours looks super clean too! I know how much harder it is keeping a car looking like that when firstly it actually gets driven and secondly when you have to maintain it like you obviously do whilst it has to live out on the street. Until about 3-4 years ago I didn't have a garage either (until I had my current one built). Additionally, I previously lived in Glasgow...with the weather there you can imagine! So you're doing a great job!

The red E28 in the background in some of those photos isn't mine. It belongs to a good friend of mine who was visiting whilst on his way to the recent Gaydon meeting. His car is super clean with only something like 15K miles on the clock now! It's actually one of the cars featured in the current Total BMW Magazine.

Here are a couple of shots of his car:

www.bmwclassics.co.uk/august06/DSC

www.bmwclassics.co.uk/august06/DSC

(hoping the links work!)

And yep, Mustard! E28 M5's like that one (ie. sans bodykit etc)...still the ultimate in 'stealth'! They just look so innocent and benign, don't they!? Remove the 'M5 badge' at the back and today very few people would have any clue as to the unpleasant surprise they'd by trying to take one of them on the road!

Cheers!

I covet an 8-series. I very nearly bought an orient blue 840Ci last year and in fact would have done had it not been parked next to a Z1 for the same price! I was fully aware of Derin's cars on his website and was very tempted but I didn't really want a silver one.

Despite passing over the 8 for the Z, I still really want one to go with the Z! Ideally an Oxford Green 850CSi with the manual box. One that is standard and hasn't been fannied about.

Nigel, I'm not sure what GLF stands for?...it's not my friend's initials though.

Teatray, yep I've kinda been thinking along Z1 lines myself for a while too...Maybe as a future project. I think it's these slightly more 'unusual' BMWs that are of interest. Even though some of them like the 8's and Z1's were somewhat criticised when first launched they now represent models so different from the norm of BMWs?

In this same bracket I'd put the Z8. Maligned by some initially, they have a certain 'interest value' now?

The only thing about them for me is the way that the prices have remained so high. My theory behind this is that a single dealership has essentially cornered the entire UK market in these and is therefore able to (in a sense) artificially maintain the price...see your latest copy of Total BMW. Try and think when was the last time you saw one of these cars being sold by anybody OTHER than this dealership?

It's a bit like the De Beers Diamond Cartel thing? i.e Diamonds aren't actually that rare a commodity...they just end up costing a lot because De Beers MAKES them 'rare' by cornering the market; only releasing them in an amount that suits their purpose of keeping prices high. I can think of no other model of BMW that has apparently maintained such a high resale value?...Seems the cheapest one for sale in the UK at the moment is still a staggering £57,000 for a 2001 car with 40,000 miles on the clock!

The same people (Hexagon London right?) to a lesser degree do the same with Late Z3M coupes

Love the look of Z1's too, and as an occasional car to covert in the garage make a lot of sense (a Plastic bodied BMW... great mechanics with nothing to rust!) I do struggle to see sale prices asked in them though

I reckon it's "goes like f**k'

Also, I nearly swapped that plate for mine, he wanted mine for his car. Chap lives in Bath. Small old world isn't it....

Teatray, if you don't mind LHD, importing and you've got a spare $75,000 that's just sitting around looking for somewhere to go:

www.roadfly.com/bmw/classifieds/cars/detview.php?view=37812

I mean I don't particularly like the wheels but in the grand scheme of things...

(Oh, just noticed you get the stock rims with it as well...so that should just about sway it!)

Well as the possessor of a Z1, I clearly don't mind LHD but I haven't sadly got a spare $75k!

Er, I actually bought the Silver one from Derin. I bought it purely on the basis of the website photo's. Apart from a paintwork glitch which was no fault of Derin's I am totally smitten with the car. Nobody knows what they are, stick a non year related reg. on it and people think it's the latest out of Munich. Well, some people do!! Seriously, an 840 CI Sport is a joy to drive, reasonably maintainable with BMW specialists, and, still gives you a lift every time you see it in the morning. Best kept BMW secret.

And Hemibum is actually one of the (many) people who have subsequently convinced me that I should also keep my current one for myself despite some 'attractive' offers!

(Will e-mail you Hemi to update you on my one...which is finally finished after the same probs you had.)
