BMW 118. Steering Lock problem

I have a 118. The electronic steering lock warning light comes on, (a red steering wheel and padlock logo) and the car is immobilised, although the lock is not always engaged. So far it has cleared itself, but not for 10-15 minutes. BMW don't seem to have any knowledge of this problem and when plugged in to their all knowing computer it shows no record of the problem either.
Any ideas?

Never seen this in the 2 years i've had mine, sounds like a one off fault, sorry

Try babybmw.net before I ditched the 120d I spent a lot of time on there and I'm sure it was an occasional issue on early cars. A search on there, or a posting should help. Even though their taste in cars is flawed they are friendly.
